HEALTH AND FITNESS EXPO TO OFFER VARIETY OF GOODS AND SERVICES TO PUBLIC
Mascot race returning to Expo with 14 mascots
AKRON, Ohio (Sept. 27, 2006) – The Road Runner Akron Marathon
Health and Fitness Expo, taking place on Friday, Sept. 29 from 11:00 a.m.
to 9:00 p.m. at the University of Akron Field House, provides the public
with an opportunity to do everything from registering for the marathon,
to adopting a pet, to trying Himalayan goji juice, to signing up for
Medicare.
The Expo, which features exhibitors’ booths from a variety of
organizations, is free and open to the public. The event is the last
chance to register for the marathon, two-person marathon relay or
five-person marathon relay that will wind through the streets of Akron on
Saturday, Sept. 30 at 7:30 a.m. All runners must attend the expo to pick
up their race packet, bibs, timing chips and other necessary information.
A large variety of Road Runner Akron Marathon running gear and clothing
will be on sale at the Expo.
Expo attendees will also have the opportunity to “ask the
doc” sports-specific questions. Nilesh Shah, M.D. of Summa Center for
Sports Health will be available from noon to 2:00 p.m. to speak with
attendees. Marathon legend, Bill Rodgers, will be signing autographs at
the Expo from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Rodgers is a four-time Boston Marathon
and New York Marathon winner.
Also presenting at the expo is Dr. Pamela M. Peeke, the
Discovery Health Chief Medical Correspondent for Nutrition and Fitness.
Peeke is a nationally recognized physician, scientist and expert in the
fields of nutrition, metabolism, stress and fitness. She has authored
several bestselling books, including Fight Fat After Forty, Body for Life
for Women and The National Body Challenge Success Program for the Whole
Family.
The Health and Fitness Expo will feature over 80 booths,
including University of Akron Department of Athletics; Second Sole;
Medicare Bus with on-site registrations; Etonic; Coca-Cola; Akron Zoo;
Red Cross; Humane Society Adopt a Pet; Ruch Chiropractic with chair
massages; ARBONNE – Swiss skin care; Cookie Lee jewelry; Spa at Yellow
Creek; Elite Runners and Walkers; Free Life the Himalayan goji juice
company; the Road Runner Akron Marathon merchandise store; and many more.
The Expo will also feature a Kids Area that offers kids’
activities and crafts throughout the day. Kids may register for the 1K
Kids Fun Run that begins at the Spaghetti Warehouse parking lot Saturday,
Sept. 30 at 9:00 a.m.
The fan-favorite 2nd Annual Zippy Invitational Mascot Relay will take
place on the field at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Fourteen life-sized mascots
from surrounding sports teams and organizations will compete for the
title of Mascot Relay Champion.
Participants in the mascot relay include Moondog from the
Cleveland Cavaliers; Zippy from The University of Akron; Road Runner,
Bugs Bunny and Wiley Coyote from Time Warner Cable; Carrie Bou – from
Caribou Coffee, Crusher from Youngstown Steel Hounds, Firestone High
School Falcon; Browser from Akron Beacon Journal; Buck from Acme Fresh
Markets; Gilby from Akron Public Schools, Louie Lightning Bug from First
Energy, Orbit from Akron Aeros; and Wheelie from Akron Racers.
