Akron Marathon Race Director Jim Barnett Retires
Barnett Will Continue to Have a Strategic Presence on the Board of Trustees
Akron, OH (October 31, 2012) – Akron Marathon Race Director Jim Barnett has
retired from the Akron Marathon effective October 31, 2012.
Barnett will continue to be actively involved with the future planning,
organization and strategy of the Akron Marathon through his appointment to
the Board of Trustees. He will become an active member effective November
1, 2012.
"From the very beginning, Jim Barnett has been instrumental in the
development, planning and implementation of the Akron Marathon," said Steve
Marks, founder. "He helped take the Akron Marathon from a concept to an
Akron staple and world-class event. We look forward to his continued
presence as a driving force with the evolution and continued expansion of
the Akron Marathon."
Anne Bitong, executive director, said, "Jim Barnett has been instrumental
to the success and growth of the Akron Marathon. His experience in knowing
what it takes to put on a phenomenal race will be extremely valuable in his
new role on the board. I look forward to working with Jim in this new and
exciting way."
Barnett has a varied and adventurous history as a U.S. Marine, businessman
and avid athlete. His athletic history includes distance running,
cross-country skiing, long-distance wilderness canoe racing, Telemark Ski
slalom racing, technical rock and vertical ice climbing, mountain climbing,
whitewater kayaking, and being a private pilot and a certified scuba
enthusiast.
Barnett is well-known among runners for shaking the hand of every
participant at the marathon finish line and sending a personal thank you
email to everyone who runs the race.
The 11th Annual Akron Marathon, presented by Time Warner Cable, will be
held Saturday, September 28, 2013.
