MOUNTAINTOP MARATHON SET FOR SEPTEMBER 12, 2009
Big Bear Lake Hosts Event in Pristine Setting
(Big Bear Lake, CA)- The second annual Big Bear Marathon is scheduled for
Saturday, September 12, 2009 with a variety of events in a family-friendly
community. The 26.2-mile race circles around Big Bear Lake offering
mountain and forest vistas, all at or near 7000 ft. elevation. The Big
Bear valley is known for 300 days of annual sunshine, crisp clean air and
resort amenities. The area boasts ample outdoor activities including;
forest hiking trails, boat rentals, fishing, kayaking, hang gliding,
horseback riding, a golf course and extensive picnic grounds. The day will
also include a half marathon, 5K, Kids Run and Bicycle Tour that mirrors
the marathon route.
According to Tony Torres winner of the 2008 Big Bear Marathon, "this run is
very unique; the elevation presents some challenges, but the beautiful
sights along the course are very inspiring." Torres was the 2005 winner of
the San Francisco Marathon and is a three-time winner of the Lake Tahoe
Marathon.
Big Bear Lake is located in the Inland Empire in Southern California, an
easy drive from Los Angeles, San Diego, Palm Springs and Orange County.
"This is a destination event," explains Race Producer Darrel Courtney.
"Participants and their families can plan a weekend trip for the race,
expanding their visit to take in the San Bernardino National Forest and all
the serenity it has to offer." There is also a quaint village with shops
and restaurants as well as a selection of lodging options, including full
service hotels, private cabins and camping facilities.
In addition to the races, a two-day Health and Fitness Expo will take place
September 11 – 12, 2009. Race competitors and their guests are invited to
browse a variety of vendors that include health food companies, apparel
firms and gear companies. A lakeside finish festival will celebrate the
race conclusion with live music.
The Big Bear Marathon is the only full marathon in San Bernardino County.
Registration is now open. A portion of the entrance fees will be donated
to the food bank program coordinated through Rotary Club of Big Bear Lake.
