FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THE AMICA INSURANCE BREAKERS MARATHON RETURNS TO NEWPORT THIS WEEKEND
Runners will race through some of the most beautiful sites in Rhode Island
while raising money for the Providence Ronald McDonald House
LINCOLN, RHODE ISLAND - October 14, 2008 – The Amica Insurance Breakers
Marathon is returning to Newport, Rhode Island on Saturday, October 18,
2008. More than 1,000 runners from around the world, including elite
athletes, will be descending on the Ocean State to participate in this
world-class event and compete on the 26.2 mile course.
The marathon covers a rolling course on scenic Newport and Middletown
roads. Starting in downtown Newport on America's Cup Boulevard, the course
runs through some of the most beautiful spots on Aquidneck Island: historic
Thames Street in downtown Newport, around Fort Adams State Park, past
Hammersmith Farm and the Newport Country Club, around scenic Brenton Point
and Ocean Drive, past the famous Bellevue Avenue Mansions, by beautiful
ocean views along Surfers Beach and Second Beach, through the Sachuest
Point National Wildlife Refuge, along the Norman Bird Sanctuary, through
quiet back-country Indian Avenue, past majestic Saint Georges Academy and
finishing at Easton's Beach. The course is USATF-certified and a qualifier
for the Boston Marathon.
The event will also honor Patti Catalano, who will return to Newport, the
place of her first marathon win in 1976. By 1980 she was winning nearly
every race that she entered, and she soon became the first American woman
to run a marathon faster than 2:30. Patti will be returning to Newport and
reflecting on her experience of 32 years ago, a major turning point where
she learned she had what it took to be an elite, world-class marathoner.
The mission of the 2008 Amica Insurance Breakers Marathon race weekend is
to have a first-class marathon race in the great state of Rhode Island
while raising money for the Providence Ronald McDonald House. For more
