Fierce competition the norm as record number of vendors compete for
runners' dollars at the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon
Health & Fitness Expo
CLEVELAND (May 15, 2007) – Running shoes; apparel; technical accessories;
nutritional supplements; and expert training, fitness and diet advice will
go on sale to the public at Cleveland’s biggest running gear sale of the
year Friday, May 18, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, May 19, 10 a.m. to 6
p.m., at Cleveland Convention Center, Hall D.
The opening of the 30th Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K
Health & Fitness Expo Friday marks the traditional kick off of race
weekend. 112 vendor booths have been rented – the most in the history of
the race and expo.
About 9,000 runners will visit the expo to pick up their race packets, but
the expo is not just for registered runners. “It’s for everyone who is
interested in running, in staying healthy and fit, and in shopping,” said
Beth Salinger, Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon Health & Fitness Expo organizer.
In addition to masses of merchandise from every running gear manufacturer,
this year’s expo features a Runner’s Clinic that includes a virtual Who’s
Who of running. Those scheduled to speak include:
Amby Burfoot: winner of the 1968 Boston Marathon, 9-time winner of the
Manchester (Conn.) Thanksgiving Day Race, Road Runners Club of America
Hall-of-Fame Inductee, and editor-in-chief of Runner’s World Magazine
(presenting Friday, 1:00 and 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, 11:15 a.m.).
Anne Audain: seven-time Cleveland 10K Winner; six-time Olympian; former
5,000 meter world record holder, first-ever professional female distance
runner; and co-author of the autobiography Uncommon Heart (presenting
Friday, 4:00 p.m. and Saturday, 12:00 and 5:15 p.m.).
John Bingham: runner and author of The Courage to Start: A Guide to Running
for Your Life; Marathoning for Mortals: A Regular Person's Guide to the Joy
of Running or Walking a Full or Half Marathon; and The Penguin Brigade
Training Log (presenting Friday 3:15 p.m., and Saturday 12:45 and 3:45
p.m.).
Jeff Galloway: 1972 Olympian in the 10,000 meters; author of the top
selling running book in North America, You Can Do It!; and creator of the
renown Galloway walk-run, low mileage marathon training program, which has
a 98 percent success rate (presenting Friday 12:15 and 4:45 p.m. and
Saturday 2:15 p.m.).
Kitty Consolo: two-time Cleveland Marathon winner and winner of more than
400 races in her lifetime; Ph.D. in exercise physiology from Kent State
University; author, and founder of Livewell for Life, (presenting Friday
2:30 p.m. and Saturday, 3:00 p.m.)
Another guest speaker at this year’s marathon will be Celebrity Chef Jon
Ashton resident chef of CW’s The Daily Buzz. Chef Ashton is traveling to
Cleveland with new snacking recipes to help Americans get out of their
snacking rut and provide smarter snacking solutions for everyone. He will
share healthy snacking options by using Smucker’s® Low Sugar™ and Sugar
Free jellies and natural peanut butter. Ashton will present live at the
Smucker’s booth at the Expo on Friday from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m.
The Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon Health and Fitness Expo will be the final
opportunity for people to register for Sunday’s races, which include the
marathon, half-marathon, 10K, wheelchair challenge and walking divisions.
