FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Collin Marathon Cancelled
The Collin Marathon, scheduled for March 6, 2011, has been cancelled due to
recently disclosed police requirements from Allen and Plano that would make
the event financially and logistically impossible. The event was to include
a full marathon, a half marathon and a one mile fun run to benefit the Boy
Scouts of America.
The longer races would have benefited four designated children's charities
including Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Children's Foundation, The YMCA and
City House.
Presently, Collin County does not have a full marathon. There is a sole
half marathon that will be run New Years Day, 1-1-11, totally on hike and
bike trails within Allen.
The planned Collin Marathon had a picturesque route through town and
country settings in Allen, Plano, Frisco and McKinney. The route was
popular with local runners because of the diversity of scenery and less
than 300 feet of elevation gain.
"The sad part about this development is that marathons are very good for
the community," said John Bick, race director. "We were pulling together
all facets of this community for a common and healthful purpose."
The Collin Marathon was expecting to attract 2500 runners and grow to at
least 10,000 within four years. About one-third of the runners would come
from out of the area bringing cheerleading friends and relatives to spend
money though out the weekend.
"The marathon would have been a win-win for tax revenues, hotels,
restaurants, and nonprofit organizations," said Jack Bick, president of the
event. "With the restrictive and unwritten regulations, there may never be
a marathon in Collin County. We thank everyone who supported this effort
including our sponsors and the running community."
Jack Bick has been a resident of Collin County for 20 years. He was
publisher of the Dallas Business Journal and subsequently founded Inside
Collin County Business. The company was not only known for its news content
but also served the community by establishing the Celebration of Enterprise
Awards for successful companies, the Collin 60 Awards for emerging
businesses and the 21 for the 21st Century Leadership Program.
John Bick has been in sports marketing for over 10 years with Professional
Sports Marketing of McKinney, FCDallas Soccer Team, and The Texas Rangers
Baseball Team and was the founding vice president of tickets for the Allen
American Hockey Team.
