The Cowtown Celebrates 35 Years with New Records
(Fort Worth, TX) --- The Cowtown Marathon celebrated 35 years of running
this past weekend with record breaking attendance! The Cowtown's
registration was larger than ever with just under 27,000 runners
registered. Setting new registration records in the Ultra Marathon, Full
Marathon, Half Marathon and theCook Children's 5K races.
Records were broken not only in overall attendance but in finishing times
for 5 races. Logan Sherman took the title as the fastest male in the Ultra
Marathon with a time of 3:10:40 shaving off over 7 minutes from the
old record. Elizabeth Eder, a Fort Worth Native smashed the record in the
women's full marathon by 20 minutes with a time of 2:46:09. Elizabeth was
also the winner at the San Antonio Rock n Roll Marathon in November, 2012.
New Records in the Half Marathon were set on Sunday for both the male and
female runners. Monika Korra finished with a time of 1:21:25 and Jerrod
McNeil came in with a time of 1:09:49.
On Saturday, a new record was set for the Male 10K by Antti-Pekka Niinisto
with a time of 31:16. The Adult 5K male and female divisions also had new
records set, Jessica Smith finished with a time of 18:21 and Dereje
Hailegiorgis finished in 15 minutes flat.
The Cowtown's mission is to promote health & wellness in the community.
Working through our C.A.L.F. Program we were able to assist over 2,100
North Texas school children by providing, training tools, monetary
assistance with entry into the race and New Balance Running shoes. The
number of awards has increased by 700 from last year when The Cowtown
distributed funds and shoes to just over 1,400 children. Every runner's
participation in The Cowtown helps support The Cowtown C.A.L.F. (Children's
Activities for Life & Fitness) Program.
Established in 1979, The Cowtown races are presented by the University of
North Texas Health Science Center, Chase, HCA North Texas, MillerCoors,
Star-Telegram, NBC 5, The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and
RadioShack. For the second year, Cook Children's Health Care System is the
title sponsor of the Kids 5K event named, The Cowtown Cook Children's 5K.
The Aetna Foundation has joined The Cowtown for the first time to assist
with the C.A.L.F. Program.
