FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sixth Annual Christiana Care Health System
Delaware Marathon Running Festival
presented by New Balance Delaware to be held Sunday, May 17, 2009
Wilmington, DE, December 12, 2008 - Registration is now open for the
Christiana Care Health System Delaware Marathon Running Festival presented
by New Balance Delaware on Sunday, May 17, 2009. More than 2,000 runners
from all fifty states are expected to compete in Delaware's largest (and
oldest) marathon running festival, which consists of a 26.2 mile marathon;
a 13.1 mile half-marathon; and a four person (6.55 mile) team marathon
relay. All events will be run on brand new USATF certified scenic courses
that start and finish at Tubman Garrett Riverfront Park in Wilmington,
Delaware.
The Delaware Marathon holds the Delaware State records for the marathon:
2:27:49 by Michael Wardian of VA at its 2005 event and 2:59:24 by Feng Sun
of MD at its 2006 event. The new 13.1 mile race course begins and finishes
at Tubman Garrett Riverfront Park and proceeds from the Wilmington
Riverfront to Brandywine Park, along Kentmere and Bancroft Parkways,
through Wawaset Park and Little Italy. Historically, 14% of the Delaware
Marathon field has qualified for the prestigious Boston Marathon and the 4
Person Team Relay continues to grow in popularity each year.
To help celebrate its sixth anniversary, New Balance Delaware will be
providing technical shirts to the marathon and half marathon participants
and new finisher medals have been designed. $2500 in cash awards will be
distributed in all three races; amounts which can be doubled if the
Delaware resident marathon or half marathon records are broken.
Additionally, $25 cash awards will be issued to those runners who set an
event record by representing their home state.
The Delaware Marathon Running festival also includes a (free to the public)
Christiana Care Health and Fitness Exposition, a Run 1, 4 Fun! one-mile,
family friendly, fun run; music and entertainment on the course and at the
finish; a tented, seated hospitality garden; and a Not For Runners Only
pre-race party at Joe's Crab Shack. 2009 charity beneficiaries include the
YMCA of Delaware's Strong Kids Campaign; Kid's with Confidence, a facial
and dental surgical program for local kids; and the Center for Heart &
Vascular Health at Christiana Care. The Delaware Marathon Running
Festival has donated over $50,000 to charity in its first five years.
