79-Year-Old Record Holder to Run Des Moines Marathon
July 25, 2002 - Des Moines, Iowa - Helen Klein has put a lot of miles
under her feet. The 79-year-old retired nurse holds more than 75 world and
American records in her age group for races at 1 mile, 10K, marathon (26.2
miles), 50K, 50 miles, 100K, 100 miles, 24 hours, 48 hours, 5 days and 6
days. And now she's coming to Des Moines to run the Inaugural Alliance
Technologies Des Moines Marathon.
At age 55, Helen Klein began running with no previous experience in
running or athletic sports. That was almost 25 years ago. Today, Klein
competes around the world in marathon and endurance races. To date, she
has completed 58 marathons and 132 ultramarathons, or races longer and
more challenging than standard marathons. She is a great-grandmother, and
a motivational speaker.
On October 6, 2002, she will compete in the first running of the Inaugural
Alliance Technologies Des Moines Marathon. She will also be the featured
speakerat the event's Pasta Dinner the evening before the marathon.
"It's truly amazing to have a living legend travel across the country to our
city's marathon," said Helene Neville, executive director for the Des Moines
marathon. "She is awesome. I look forward to our spectators cheering her on
toanother world record. What a rare chance to see a world champion."
Klein will be the keynote speaker at the Pasta Dinner, held the evening
before the marathon. The dinner is open to race registrants and to the
public. It will be held Saturday, October 5, 2002 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the
Hotel Savery. The dinner is just $12 per person.
