also marketing director of the retirement community.

More than 200 of the 1,000-plus registered participants were age 50 or
above. The oldest finishers in the full marathon, both age 75, were Ray
Moses of Huntsville, Ala., and Eugene DeFronzo of Cheshire, Conn. The

The Garden Spot Village Marathon previously offered first, second and
third-place awards for men and women in age categories, in five-year
increments, ranging from ages 13-19 to age 70-plus. This year, the age
category awards were extended to recognize the individual achievements of
men and women runners ages 65 to 69, 70 to 74, 75 to 79, 80 to 84, and
85-plus. The event is believed to be the first marathon hosted by a
retirement community.

An estimated 2,000 runners and spectators gathered near the community's
LegacyGarden in the cool, crisp morning air for the start of the race. Sen.
Mike Brubaker sent the marathoners on their way along a USA Track & Field
(USATF)-certified course, which circles through the farmlands at the foot
of Welsh Mountain before returning to the 104-acre Garden Spot Village
campus. The event is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.
