Publix Georgia Marathon Named Georgia's 2011 Championship Marathon Race by RRCA
2011 Accolade Marks Fourth Consecutive Championship Honor
Atlanta, GA – December 22, 2010 – The Publix Georgia Marathon is on a
streak. US Road Sports, owners and operators of the race, announced today
that the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) has named the Publix Georgia
Marathon as the state of Georgia's 2011 Championship Marathon Race. 2011
marks the fourth consecutive year that the Atlanta event has held state or
southern regional championship honors. The race received RRCA Georgia
Marathon Championship Race honors in 2008 and 2010, and RRCA Southern
Regional Marathon Championship honors in 2009. The Publix Georgia Marathon
will take place at 7:00 a.m. ET on Sunday, March 20, 2011, at Centennial
Olympic Park located in downtown Atlanta.
"When evaluating a race, we look for many aspects that encompass our idea
of what a race should provide to runners competing for Georgia Marathon
State Championship Honors," said RRCA State Representative, Mark Ward.
"For the fourth consecutive year, the RRCA has found the Georgia Marathon
deserving of a championship title. Receiving this award while
transitioning to Publix as the new title sponsor speaks highly about the
race and the personnel involved."
"We are excited and honored that the RRCA has chosen the Publix Georgia
Marathon as Georgia's Marathon Championship Race in 2011," said Founding
Partner and CEO of US Road Sports, Greg Laird. "We listen to post-race
feedback from runners every year, and we do our best to implement changes
that will positively impact their needs for the race. We are privileged to
have the RRCA recognize our hard work with this championship distinction,
and we know that the race would not receive this recognition without the
dedication of the runners and volunteers who make the race a great
experience for everyone involved."
Running the Publix Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon has become an annual
March staple for distance runners since 2007. This year's race-goers will
receive a customized running tech shirt, a finisher's medal, a Publix
drawstring goodie bag and a special food item to enjoy during the post race
party. More than 17,000 runners participated in last year's events and US
Road Sports continues to offer local and out of town participants many
reasons to return in 2011. Publix Georgia Marathon Race Weekend will
provide short distance runners and children a chance to participate at the
Publix Run Wild 5k and Kids Fun Run on Saturday, March 19, in Grant Park
and all participants will have a chance to receive health and fitness tips
and purchase running gear at the Publix Georgia Marathon Health & Fitness
Expo located at the Georgia Dome on Friday, March 18, and Saturday, March
19.
The 26.2-mile and 13.1-mile courses serve as a true showcase of historic
Atlanta and surrounding neighborhoods, taking participants through the
Sweet Auburn District, Inman Park, Decatur, Druid Hills, Virginia-Highland,
and Midtown areas. Along the way, runners pass landmarks such as the King
Historic Site, Carter Center, four college campuses (Georgia Tech, Emory
University, Georgia State University, Agnes State College), and Piedmont
Park.
