(Duluth, Minn.) Registration for the 33rd running of Grandma's Marathon
begins Thursday at 12:01 a.m. (CST). The race entry procedure was converted
to an online format in 2008 and that system will be in place again this
year, so runners looking to register should visit www.GrandmasMarathon.com.
The 26.2-mile race, which has reached its capacity for 14 consecutive
years, is limited to the first 9,500 participants. Last year, the race was
more than half full in the first 24 hours after registration opened.
"We were very pleased with how well our transition to online registration
worked last year, and we are excited to begin the entry process for this
spring's event," says Scott Keenan, executive director of the race, the
11th largest marathon in the United States.
Grandma's Marathon weekend also features the 19th annual Garry Bjorklund
Half Marathon and the 16th annual William A. Irvin 5K. Registration for
those two events will begin in February and March, respectively. The Garry
Bjorklund Half Marathon is Saturday, June 20 at 6:30 a.m. and the William
A. Irvin 5K is Friday, June 19 at 6 p.m.
In all, more than 18,000 runners and 50,000 race fans from around the world
will participate in the 33rd annual Grandma's Marathon weekend, which is
presented by Target, Toyota and Wells Fargo Bank Duluth.
