Running Legend Visits Duluth StudentsApril 28 Fit-n-Fun Program to feature Bill Rodgers(Duluth, Minn.) - Former American marathon record-holder Bill
Rodgers will be the featured speaker at this week's Duluth Children's
Fit-n-Fun Middle School Assemblies, Grandma's Marathon announced today.
Rodgers will give presentations to students at Duluth's Woodland Middle
School at 8 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday, April 28.
"We are thrilled to have Bill assisting us with this youth program," said
Laura Bergen, director of event and program development for Grandma's
Marathon. "This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to hear from an
American running icon."
Rodgers brilliant running career included being a four-time champion of
both the Boston Marathon and the New York City Marathon, all between 1975
and 1980. He twice set American records at Boston - in 1975 with a time of
2:09:55 and in 1979, when he ran a personal best 2:09:27.
A 1976 U.S. Olympian and winner of 22 career marathons, Rodgers, 62, is a
member of both the National Track & Field and National Distance Running
Halls of Fame.
In 2008, Grandma's Marathon and the Young Athletes Foundation partnered
with Duluth Public School Systems and Duluth Children's, an affiliate of
SMDC Health System, to create the Duluth Children's Fit-n-Fun Middle School
Assemblies and Fit-n-Fun Run. These two initiatives are aimed at motivating
children to lead healthier lifestyles.
The 2010 Fit-n-Fun Run is set for Wednesday, May 19 at the Duluth Central
High School track.
