FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Don't Miss Friday's Park Point 5-Miler
(Duluth, Minn.) Northern Minnesota's oldest road race – the 39th annual
Park Point 5-Miler and 2-Mile Walk – is Friday, July 16.
Online pre-registration is available through 3 p.m. Thursday at
GrandmasMarathon.com or YoungAthletesFoundation.com. To sign up on
race day, visit the pavilion at the end of Park Point between 3 p.m. and 5
p.m. The entry fee for the five-mile run and two-mile walk is $25, while
the youth races are free.
The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with youth races for children 14 and under,
followed by the two-mile walk at 6:15 p.m., and then the five-mile feature
race at 6:30 p.m.
Defending five-mile run champions Jeremy Polson and Jen Houck are
registered, as is 2010 William A. Irvin 5K champion Scott Behling. Polson
and Houck, the 2009 Minnesota Runners of the Year, won the race in both
2008 and 2009. Last year, Houck's time of 28 minutes and 30 minutes
established a new course record for the women's division.
All finishers in the run and walk receive a commemorative T-shirt and
awards are presented to the top participants at an award ceremony following
the five-mile run. Ribbons are awarded to youth race participants upon
completion of their event.
Participants are encouraged to plan extra travel time due to the increased
usage of the aerial lift bridge and traffic on Park Point. To ensure the
safety of race participants, Minnesota Avenue will be closed to vehicular
traffic from approximately 6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Net proceeds from the Park Point 5-Miler benefit the Young Athletes
Foundation (YAF), a Grandma's Marathon program focused on the promotion and
development of youth athletics.
The Park Point 5-Miler is sponsored by 10fold Solutions, Anytime Fitness,
City of Duluth, Duluth News Tribune, Duluth Running Company, Fitger's,
Great Harvest Bread, Integrity Health Network, maurices, Minnesota Power,
MIX 108, Northland's NewsCenter, Sam's Club, St. Luke's and The Shack
