ING Hartford Marathon Raises $145,000 for
Connecticut Children's Medical Center
April 2010, Glastonbury, Conn. – Each October since its inception in
1994, thousands of runners have participated in the Hartford Marathon
Foundation's signature event, the ING Hartford Marathon. The Foundation's
mission has been to organize programs and events that promote health,
fitness and enjoyment for all participants and to give back to community
charities and the city of Hartford. One notable beneficiary of the 2009
ING Hartford Marathon last fall is Connecticut Children's Medical Center
which has received donations totaling more than $145,000.
The Hartford Marathon Foundation encourages runners to participate in one
of the many Marathon opportunities to "Run For A Cause" and give back to
organizations who make it their business to help others. Established by the
Foundation and supported each year, "Run for a Cause" partners local
non-profit organizations with Marathon participants and provides tools for
raising both awareness and funds for their respective causes. Over the last
16 years, the Foundation has raised more than $3.4 million for charities.
An official 2009 Marathon Charity, Connecticut Children's received a record
amount of donations from Marathon participants this year. The funds—some of
which were raised by Connecticut Children's own Wings of Hope team—will
support numerous programs at Connecticut Children's including its new
Clinical Care Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.
"Our new Clinical Care Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders will address
the need for additional space for an increasing number of children from
throughout our region," said Martha Schall, president of the Connecticut
Children's Medical Center Foundation. "It's because of the generosity of
all these participants that Connecticut Children's is able to provide
superior pediatric care for all our patients and families in such a
compassionate and nurturing environment."
"We've always encouraged our runners to share the Foundation's commitment
to our local community and couldn't be happier that they stepped up to the
plate for Connecticut Children's even in tougher economic times," said Beth
Shluger, race director of the ING Hartford Marathon. "We hope the spirit
and enthusiasm of running for a cause continues and that we can exceed
these numbers with the 2010 race."
The 17th annual ING Hartford Marathon will take place October 9, 2010 in
Bushnell Park and offer youth running events in addition to the 5K, Half
Marathon and Marathon races. The Hartford Marathon Foundation will produce
over 30 events and programs for 2010.
