Chevron Houston Marathon's Run for a Reason Charity Program
Adds Another Record to the Books
Generates $2.3 million to benefit 57 participating charities
HOUSTON (Feb. 29, 2012) – The Chevron Houston Marathon's Run for a Reason
charity program has set a new fundraising record of more than $2.3 million
to benefit 57 charities. With more than 18,000 donations, the 2011-2012
season marks the third consecutive record year of the program, generating
nearly $15 million in its 18-year history.
"Coming off a record-breaking 40th anniversary race weekend with four
course records, an all-time high for spectators and marathon finishers, and
an unprecedented Olympic Trials, we could not be more thrilled to announce
this fundraising record and honored to help support our local charities,"
stated Wade Morehead, executive director of the Houston Marathon Committee.
"Our committed runners continue to do extraordinary fundraising for our
community, and the tremendous growth of this program would not be possible
without their passionate commitment to giving."
Race participants and donors raised more than $2 million prior to race day,
January 15, 2012, of the 40th anniversary Chevron Houston Marathon, Aramco
Houston Half Marathon and El Paso Corporation 5K, nearly reaching the
program's previous record total of $2.1 million set in 2011.
Since breaking the $1-million fundraising mark in 2008, the number of
fundraisers and charity donations has more than tripled and generated $8.6
million, more than half of the program's total funds raised since its
inception in 1995.
The Run for a Reason program links runners with participating nonprofits
and provides a platform for charities to raise awareness and funds as well
as educate others about their cause. The program also offers alternative
ways to enter the marathon and half marathon races through "Heroes" charity
registration and "fundraise for registration" options. Details about these
charity registrations can be found at RunforaReasonHouston.org.
Official 2012-2013 Run for a Reason charities will be announced on May 1,
2012. Fundraising will open on May 8, the first day of early race
registration.
The 41st running of the Chevron Houston Marathon, Aramco Houston Half
Marathon and EP5K is scheduled for January 13, 2013. Lottery registration
for the marathon and half marathon races opens on June 6, 2012 at
ChevronHoustonMarathon.com.
