30th Annual Lakefront Marathon Marked by Record Crowd,
Former Olympians, Champions
MILWAUKEE (May 5, 2010) - Last year the Lakefront Marathon was a hot
ticket. This year will be even hotter.
As Milwaukee's Lakefront Marathon marks is 30th anniversary, the race
announced that for the sixth consecutive year, the marathon has filled to
its capacity, nearly one month ahead of the record pace from 2009 and
almost six months ahead of race day, reinforcing the national popularity of
marathons and distance running.
Participants and fans of Milwaukee's Lakefront Marathon can expect a top
field in 2010, as the marathon will serve as the Road Runners Club of
America national marathon championship. Race organizers are also trying to
make contact will all former race winners and have invited them to run the
marathon or participate in Championship Relay teams.
"We really wanted the 30th anniversary of this event to be a celebration of
all the hard work and great people who have helped make the Lakefront
Marathon a destination race," said Kris Hinrichs, race director. "Our race
has always been about our runners first and foremost, and it's grown to be
a race this entire community has embraced."
1996 U.S. Olympian To Highlight Speakers, Participants
The 2010 race will feature Anne Marie Letko, a 1996 U.S. Olympian
marathoner who finished 10th overall in the Atlanta games and participated
in the 2000 Sydney Olympics in the 5000m. She will both speak at the annual
race expo, October 1-2 at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) Kern
Center, and participate in her first marathon in several years on October 3
at Grafton High School.
"Having a recent Olympian tell her story to our runners is something we're
really excited about," said Hinrichs.
Kids Race Returns in 2010
Back this year after a one-year hiatus is the Lakefront Kids Run. Children,
ages 5-14, will be able to finish the last 1.2 miles of the marathon on the
course after completing a 10-week program to run a total of 25 miles
leading up the race. This program is being developed in conjunction with
