QUANTICO, Va. - (November 23, 2009) - With the results of the 34th Marine
Corps Marathon (MCM) formally finalized today, event organizers determined
Judith Mosely, 42, of Triangle, Virginia was the 18,530th finisher at the
October 25 event earning her recognition as the 400,000th finisher in the
event's history.
The mother of three completed her first marathon in 5:39:49 on her wedding
anniversary. Mosely's landmark finish will be commemorated with a special
plaque from MarthonFoto and a MCM Vermont Teddy Bear.
"In the year when we inducted the very first MCM finisher into the event's
Hall of Fame, it is especially exciting to reach the 400,000 mark for
finishers," said Rick Nealis, MCM director.
The first MCM on November 7, 1976 boasted 1,175 finishers. The 100,000th
finisher reached the Marine Corps War Memorial finish line at the 15th MCM
on November 4, 1990. It only took eight years to add another 100,000
finishers to the record books as the MCM welcomed its 200,000th finisher on
October 25, 1998. On October 31, 2004, the MCM reached the 300,000th
finisher plateau, this time taking only six years to add another 100,000
runners. The MCM sprinted to 400,000 finishers, needing just five years to
accumulate 100,000 more finishers.
Voted "Best Marathon for Families", the Marine Corps Marathon continues a
combined tradition of dedication, sportsmanship and patriotism. Currently
ranked as the fifth largest marathon in the United States and ninth in the
world, "The People's Marathon" boasts a course featuring the iconic
landmarks of Washington, DC and Arlington, Virginia. The 35th MCM will be
held on Sunday, October 31, 2010. Registration opens online beginning
Wednesday, April 7, 2010. Visit: www.marinemarathon.com
