FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
2011 Marine Corps Marathon Opens Registration February 23
Deadline Arrives for Active Duty, Runners Club and Deferment Runners
QUANTICO, VA (Feb. 18, 2011) - Runners from around the world are preparing
to register for the 2011 Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) as this year's event
opens to the public at noon on Wednesday, February 23 at
www.marinemarathon.com. The registration date commemorates the anniversary
of the flag raisings during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.
"Registration for the MCM traditionally sells out quickly, so runners
should not hesitate to secure a spot in 'The People's Marathon,'" says MCM
Director Rick Nealis.
The 36th MCM will be held on Sunday, October 30. The marathon begins in
Arlington, VA, between the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery and
runs throughout some of the most scenic areas of the nation's capital
before arriving at its spectacular finish at the Marine Corps War Memorial
in Rosslyn.
The MCM has a registration capacity of 30,000 runners. During the
registration process, runners may elect to purchase MCM training apparel by
Brooks, tickets to the Carbo Dining In pasta dinner on October 29, a
digital photo package from MarathonFoto or an online marathon training
program.
Active Duty/Reserve Discount
February 22 is the final date all active duty and reserve members of the
military can receive a 15 percent registration discount.
MCM Runners Club
In addition, February 22 is the deadline for all members of the MCM Runners
Club to obtain early registration for the 2011 MCM. The MCM Runners Club
includes 2,130 marathoners who have run at least five MCMs.
2010 Deferments
February 22 also is the deadline for all runners to re-register their
deferment from the 2010 MCM to the 2011 event. More information about the
MCM Runners Club and deferments is available at www.marinemarathon.com.

dedication, sportsmanship and patriotism of its participants. Runners from
all walks of life participate in the largest marathon not to offer prize
money, earning the name, "The People's Marathon." The MCM is the fifth
largest marathon in the United States and the ninth largest in the world.
The 36th MCM will be held on October 30, in Arlington, VA. No federal or
Marine Corps endorsement is implied.
