Marine Corps Marathon Enhances Spectator Experience with Mobile Locator
Mobile App Provides Directions, Distances to
On-Course Sites Along New MCM Course
QUANTICO, VA (Oct. 18, 2011) - The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) is
introducing a new mobile locator web application to enhance the spectator
experience. MCM Locator will enable spectators to obtain directions and
approximate distances from their location to various sites along the
marathon course. By simply opening an iPhone or Android phone browser to
the website www.mcmlocator.com, spectators can view the location of MCM
mile markers, water points, transportation and food stations.
"The MCM Locator utilizes smartphone technology to best equip the huge
crowds of supporters for the frenzy that occurs when navigating the
nation's capital to cheer for a loved one," says Marc Goldman, MCM
Marketing/Sponsorship Manager.
The mobile app has been developed by Geocentric, a Bethesda, MD-based
interactive software and mapping firm. The company also designed the
interactive MCM course map featured on the event website.
As a result of construction on Constitution Avenue, the 26.2 mile MCM route
has changed this year, with runners traveling along a new course. Runners
will enjoy the "Marathon of the Monuments" as they travel adjacent to the
new Martin Luther King Memorial, FDR Memorial, World War I and World War II
Memorials, Korean Memorial, Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials, Washington
Monument and U.S. Capitol. In addition, MCM participants will run through
historic Georgetown to include the Key Bridge, C&O Canal, Georgetown
Reservoir and the excitement of downtown M Street. This year's course also
includes the Kennedy Center, and the many institutions of the Smithsonian
such as the American History, Natural History, American Indian, Air & Space
and Hirshhorn Museums and runners will travel by the U.S. Holocaust
Memorial Museum, before crossing the 14th Street Bridge over the
picturesque Potomac River.
Once in Arlington, runners will enjoy all of the energy of colorful Crystal
City. At the Pentagon, runners will pass in close proximity to the Pentagon
Memorial. The MCM course then unfurls alongside the Arlington National
Cemetery and offers a final, up-hill challenge to the grand finish at the
Marine Corps War Memorial.
Voted the best marathon for families, the Marine Corps Marathon honors the
dedication, sportsmanship and patriotism of its participants. Runners from
all walks of life participate in the largest marathon not to offer prize
money, earning the name, "The People's Marathon." The MCM, sponsored by
Brooks, Nissan, Aetna, Arlington, VA and GE, is the fifth largest marathon
in the United States and the ninth largest in the world. The 36th MCM will
be held on Oct. 30 in Arlington, VA. No federal or Marine Corps endorsement
is implied.
