Marine Corps Marathon Opens Social Media Tracking Services MCM Runners Can
Be Followed on Facebook, Twitter and through Mobile Devices
QUANTICO, VA (Oct. 4, 2012) - Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) participants and
supporters can take advantage of enhanced technologies providing immediate
updates on a runner's progress as well as valuable course navigation
information for the 37th MCM on Sunday, Oct. 28. The MCM Track a Runner
and the new Runner Broadcast Service are open for registration at
www.marinemarathon.com. The services are free and sponsored by MCM partner
Nissan. For spectators, the new MCM Locator, a web-based application,
provides distances to specific on-course sites, Metro wait times and
pace-time based information.
Track a Runner enables relatives, friends and supporters ability to follow
a runner every 10K along the course with real time updates delivered via
email or text message. Additionally, the MCM is introducing the Runner
Broadcast Service enabling runners to announce their race-day progress on a
personal Facebook page or via Twitter at each 10K mark and at the finish.
"Pushing the split times out through new technologies enables relatives and
friends who cannot attend the MCM in person the vicarious thrill of sharing
in a runner's race-day accomplishments," says Rick Nealis, MCM Director.
For MCM spectators and volunteers running around on event day, the MCM
Locator offers GPS-enabled directions to and approximate distances from
mile markers, water points and food stations. Additionally, spectators can
determine a runner's approximate time of arrival at a particular location
with the new pace time function.
Returning in 2012 is Map Track, the popular service hosted on the MCM
website. A visual tool, Map Track moves a runner-shaped icon along the MCM
course map according to individual pace. This may be used to compare
multiple runners times or contrast an individual runner against the lead
participants.
The Marine Corps Marathon honors the dedication, sportsmanship and
patriotism of its participants. Runners from all walks of life participate
in the largest marathon not to offer prize money, earning the name "The
People's Marathon."
The 37th MCM sponsored by Arlington County, Boeing, Brooks, GE, Geico and
Nissan will be held on October 28, 2012 in Arlington, VA. No federal or
Marine Corps endorsement is implied.
