Toronto Scottish Regiment to Support the 2012 Mississauga Marathon
Mississauga, Ontario - The Toronto Scottish Regiment (Queen Elizabeth, the
Queen Mother's Own) will be participating in the year's Mississauga
Marathon, both on and off the course.
"For our members, aerobic fitness is more than a good lifestyle choice –
it's a critical professional responsibility." notes Commanding Officer,
Lieutenant Colonel Fred Moore, "As part time soldiers who regularly respond
to commitments overseas and at home, maintaining the high level of fitness
required, is a continuing challenge and commitment. Likewise, as a new and
growing member of the Mississauga community, we draw on the fitness of that
community, so obviously we highly appreciate and support the impact of
events like the Mississauga Marathon."
Backing up these sentiments, the "Tor Scots" will be fielding a number of
runners for the event, as well as providing a cheer station near the Port
Credit Lighthouse at the intersection of Lakeshore Road East and Front
Street South on Sunday, May 6th. This cheer station will feature a rotating
performance by the Toronto Scottish Pipes and Drums, along with a cheer
team of soldiers in uniform. Be sure to grab a drink at the 24/26KM aid
station also on the Sunday from one of the Toronto Scottish Regiment
Cadets!
"We all benefit from a fit and healthy community" says Lieutenant Colonel
Moore, "and the Toronto Scottish wants to clearly encourage and
congratulate everyone who participates."
The Toronto Scottish Regiment is a light infantry regiment in the Canadian
Forces Primary Reserve based in two armouries in Etobicoke and Mississauga.
Originally established as the 9th Mississauga Horse Regiment in 1901, the
Regiment has been the traditional home for soldiers recruited throughout
the western GTA from the Boer War to present. The regiment played critical
roles in such famous battles as Vimy Ridge and Dieppe in the two World
Wars, and is currently providing soldiers overseas in Afghanistan and
elsewhere.
