The 9th Annual Mississauga Marathon Weekend: A Run for Everyone
The 9th annual Mississauga Marathon Weekend is a one-of-a-kind "Run for
Everyone" with 10,159 participants ranging from one to eighty-one years
old. The weekend events included a Boston-Qualifying Marathon with 1,192
runners; Half Marathon had 3,629; Valeant Pharmaceuticals 10K had 1,740
runners and 10K Student Relay with 161 teams; Starbucks Coffee Hazel 5K
with 1,552 runners; Subway 2K Fun Run/Walk with 977 participants; and
Petrillo Law Corporate/Team Relay with 85 teams. The goal is to have
people of all ages and abilities out and running, whether they are elite
athletes or simply recreational runners out for exercise and better health
and well-being.
"Our goal is to offer running events for all ages and abilities so as to
involve as many as possible to participate in the Mississauga Marathon
weekend", says Elliott Kerr, President of Landmark Sport Group and Founder
of the Mississauga Marathon. "We have created one of the most beautiful
courses in the country that includes our Lake Ontario waterfront and we
continue to strive to make it a truly unique experience for everyone."
The Mississauga Marathon's societal and community focus is evident in its
planning and implementation. While keeping entry fees low to ensure
participation, the Marathon also donates numerous entries to charitable
initiatives. In addition, over 1,500 volunteers donate their time to help
ensure the success of race weekend, and all race participants are
encouraged to use on-line fundraising tools to raise funds for local
charities including: Trillium Health Centre Foundation, Colorectal Cancer
Association of Canada, The Credit Valley Hospital Foundation, YMCA
Mississauga, YMCA of Greater Toronto, Jerry Love Children's Fund, United
Way of Peel Region, MS Society – Mississauga Chapter, New Circles Community
Services, CameronHelps, Crohn's and Colitis Foundation – Mississauga
Chapter, The Mississauga Food Bank, SickKids Foundation, The Leukemia &
Lymphoma Society, Peel Children's Aid Foundation and Wellspring Cancer
Support Network.
Beyond the event planning, the whole community is thoroughly engaged making
the Mississauga Marathon Weekend an event worth attending. Thousands of
spectators line the running route with water and cheering squads offering
moral support to spur runners and walkers on. Entire families come out to
the finish area to enjoy live music, face painters, balloon animals and
more.
The 2012 Mississauga Marathon Men's Champion is Joe Campanelli from
Etobicoke with a time of 2:32:57, and Amy Frazier from East Amherst, New
York took the women's Mississauga Marathon title with a time of 2:57:28.
Michel Lavoie from Laval, Quebec and Nelson Ndereva from Toronto crossed
the finish line in second and third in the men's category, while Christina
Clark from Guelph and Kim Fleet from London, Ontario earned their podium
finishes in second and third for the women's category of the Mississauga
Marathon.
