SunTrust National Marathon's Junior Monumental Milers Program (JuMMP)
Celebrates Second Year with Rally Finale for Youth Marathon Finishers
Event Held at King Greenleaf Recreation Center to Recognize
Achievements and Motivate Continued Efforts
Washington, D.C. - On Friday, February 27, 2009, the fourth annual SunTrust
National Marathon, Greater Washington Sports Alliance, D.C. Parks and
Recreation (DPR), D.C. Public Schools (DCPS), YMCA and corporate volunteers
from Enterprise Car Rental and On The Fly® will recognize and reward
participants who registered in the second year of the Junior Monumental
Milers Program (JuMMP). JuMMP is a run/walk program for youth in grades 2
through 8. Youth are charged with completing 26.2 miles equivalent to a
marathon over a 23-week period and tracking their miles on a runner's log.
In its second year, JuMMP registered 336 youth from 52 recreation centers
across the city.
Youth from DPR, DCPS and YMCA will take part in a Rally Finale at King
Greenleaf Recreation Center, 201 N Street, S.W. Washington, D.C. - 11:00
a.m. -12:30 p.m.
The short program will be hosted by the SunTrust National Marathon's media
partner, NBC 4 Sports Anchor, Lindsay Czarniak. Among those scheduled to
speak are Mayor Adrian Fenty and former Olympian & JuMMP chair Dominique
Dawes. The event runs from 11:00am-12:30pm with a half-hour of remarks
followed by an hour of structured action stations operated by the
Enterprise Rental Car Company employee volunteer team. Each youth will be
given a "map" of the action stations and charged with completing each
station and receiving a stamp. Once completed, they submit their stamped
map for a prize. Nutritious snacks for all participants will be provided
by On The Fly®. Sustainable fitness programs are a key initiative of
the Greater Washington Sports Alliance Foundation and the SunTrust National
Marathon.

About the JuMMP Program:
The Greater Washington Sports Alliance and 2009 SunTrust National Marathon
are pleased to partner with the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation,
DCPS, YMCA and Fit Arlington to promote the Junior Monumental Milers
Program (JuMMP) Challenge. This second year, fitness initiative promoting
youth health and physical fitness condition with a nutrition curriculum
component in the District of Columbia, expects over 1,000 area youth to
take part in the 23-week run/walk program which culminates on race day at
the SunTrust National Marathon and Half Marathon on March 21, 2009. JuMMP
registration is free and can be completed online or by mail. Youth ages
8-13 receive a Runner's Log upon registration and must bring their
completed log to race day morning at RFK Stadium to participate in race day
events and receive their official finisher shirt, running bib, medals and
goody bag. Additional community partners include D.C. Public Schools
(Middle and Elementary schools), Metropolitan Washington YMCA clubs and
Arlington County Park and Recreation's Fit Arlington program.
