2007 RRCA Award Nevada State Marathon
& Half Marathon Championships to Marathon de Mayo
The Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) announced that its newest
event club in Nevada, the Nevada Wide Open Marathon de Mayo, has
been awarded the 2007 RRCA Nevada State Marathon and Half Marathon
Championships. With the RRCA designation special awards are presented
to winners of the events in several categories.
(February 27, 2007- Reno, NEV) - The Road Runners Club of America (RRCA)
announced that its newest event club in Nevada, the Nevada Wide Open
Marathon de Mayo, has been awarded the 2007 RRCA Nevada State Marathon and
Half Marathon Championships. The event is scheduled for May 6th, 2007 in
Reno, Nevada, "The Biggest Little City in the World" with an exciting start
and finish line under the famous Reno Arch.
"We're excited that the Nevada Wide Open Marathon de Mayo has joined the
RRCA. The event offers the sport of running many of the same grass roots
qualities that is the heart and soul of the Road Runners Club of America,"
said David Cotter, the RRCA Nevada State Representative. "This will be the
very first Nevada State marathon championship to be awarded by the RRCA."
"We could not be more pleased to host the Nevada State Championships for
RRCA," said Fred Holabird, ultra marathoner and race director of the Nevada
Wide Open Marathon de Mayo. "It continues to brand our event with national
prominence and showcases our area as a destination for runners and walkers
from around the world."
Cotter also wants to remind everyone that even though this event has been
awarded State Championship Status, runners of all abilities are welcome and
encouraged to join the fun. In addition to the awards presented by the
event, the top female and male Open, Master and Grand Master (50 & older)
winners will receive unique RRCA Nevada State Marathon & Half Marathon
Championship Awards.
Since 1958, the RRCA has awarded championship events through a competitive
bidding process at the national, regional, and state level to RRCA member
clubs and events. The goal of the RRCA Championship Events is to help the
host club or event recruit top performing runners, attract sponsors, and
improve civic and media support. A championship designation communicates to
athletes and the community that the race organizers have agreed to follow
approved guidelines in the conduct of the event. The RRCA establishes
guidelines and standards for championship races, but conduct of the event
is the responsibility of the host member
