JEFF SCHIEBLER TO MAKE HIS MARATHON DEBUT AT NEW YORK


Canada's best male distance runner tipped for new national record

New York, Sept. 12, 2002- Canadian national record holder in the 3,000m, 
5,000m, 10,000m and half-marathon, Jeff Schiebler will take on the longest 
challenge of his career when he makes his marathon debut at the 2002 New 
York City Marathon on Sunday Nov. 3rd it was announced today by race 
director, Allan Steinfeld.

"Jeff is a track veteran so November 3rd will be a step up for him, but he's 
primed for it," said Steinfeld, the president and CEO of the New York Road 
Runners. "Canada may very well have a new national record holder for the 
marathon on their hands and we are proud that it could happen here at the 
New York City Marathon."

The Canadian national marathon record of 2:10:09 set by Jerome Drayton at 
Fukuoka, Japan, Dec. 7, 1975 is one of the longest standing road running 
records in the world

A native of Vancouver, Schiebler (SHEEB-ler) has spent the last six years 
living and training with the NEC Electronics Team in Japan. Schiebler, 29, 
is a two-time Olympian at 10,000m in 1996 and 2000.

This year Schiebler represented Canada again at the Commonwealth Games in 
Manchester, England in the 5,000m (13th place, 13:49.02) and 10,000m (6th 
place, 28:29.22).

Schiebler holds the Canadian national records at 3,000m (7:43.42, Aug. 25,  
1998 Lausanne, Switzerland); 5,000m (13:13.96, Sept 1, 1998, Berlin); 
10,000m (27:36.01, May 4, 2001, Palo Alto) and half-marathon (1:01:28, Jan 
15, 1999, Tokyo).

The men's and women's champions of the 33rd running of the NYC Marathon will 
each earn $80,000 plus a Pontiac Vibe. The 2002 New York City Marathon is 
expected to draw an open field of around 30,000 participants.

Inaugurated in 1970 with 127 entrants, the New York City Marathon has grown 
into the world's premiere road race, featuring 30,000 participants, some 2.5 
million live spectators, a leading elite field, and a guaranteed prize purse 
of more than $475,000. Broadcast across the nation and in 125 countries 
worldwide, the 26.2-mile footrace is the United States' most watched one-day 
sporting event. The New York City Marathon takes place the first Sunday in 
November each year and is the premier event of the New York Road Runners,
