FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Philadelphia Marathon Wants You!
Volunteers Needed For 18th Annual Race Weekend.
PHILADELPHIA (October 21, 2011) – Are you ready for the best time of your
life? Philadelphia Marathon Race Organizers are seeking 3,000 volunteers
to support the 18th annual Philadelphia Marathon Race Weekend, November
18-20, 2011. Volunteers will be a part of the Philadelphia Marathon Race
Weekend experience, a high-profile world-class event that includes the
Health & Fitness Expo on Friday, November 18 and Saturday, November 19; the
Rothman Institute 8K on Saturday, November 19; and the Philadelphia
Marathon and Philadelphia Half Marathon on Sunday, November 20.
Volunteers will have a front row seat to the race. You will meet and help
27,000 participants who come to Philadelphia from every state in the nation
and more than 40 countries for Race Weekend. Volunteering provides an
opportunity to assist the community, meet other people and enjoy a day of
race-watching in many historic Philadelphia neighborhoods. Sign up with
friends, family, co-workers, schools, churches and community organizations.
Work together and have fun while supporting this exciting event.
"I've been volunteering at the Philadelphia Marathon for the past eight
years with my running club, the Wissahickon Wanderers, and it is always a
lot of fun," said Dan Gordon, volunteer at the Philadelphia Marathon. "We
love cheering on the runners and helping them reach their goal. You feel
like you're a part of the race!"
There is a role for everyone! Volunteer opportunities include course
marshals who give directions to runners and spectators, and hydration
station workers who fill, distribute and clean up refreshment cups at each
station along the route to keep the athletes hydrated while running.
Volunteers are also needed to set up and distribute medals, Heatsheets and
post-race refreshments to finishers. In the days prior to the races,
volunteers are needed to assist with pre-race activities including packet
stuffing, registration, and staffing the Health & Fitness Expo. If you have
a strong work ethic and an interest in having fun, then volunteering at
Race Weekend is perfect for you. Plus, all volunteers will receive an
official 2011 Philadelphia Marathon volunteer sweatshirt.
This year, there is an opportunity to join the Philadelphia Mayor's Office
of Sustainability and the Mayor's Office of Civic Engagement and Volunteer
Service's Waste Watchers team, which is partnering with the Philadelphia
Marathon to send less waste to landfills. The Waste Watchers team will help
spectators and participants sort their trash, recycling, and compost into
the right containers, keeping the streets of Philadelphia clean and
welcoming, and reducing the amount of trash the races send to the landfill.
If interested, please contact the race's volunteer coordinator, Katie
Morrison at , or register at

The City of Philadelphia, Running's Best Host City, will welcome 25,000
runners and more than 60,000 spectators at the 2011 Philadelphia Marathon
Race Weekend. In addition to the Philadelphia Marathon on Sunday, November
20, Race Weekend features three other races – the Half Marathon also on
Sunday, as well as the Rothman Institute 8K and the Kids Fun Run on
Saturday, November 19. Other activities to welcome runners, families,
friends, spectators, businesses and residents include a free two-day Health
& Fitness Expo; a free course map complete with retail discounts and
promotions, and more than 20 spectator cheer zones. Runners pass many of
Philadelphia's famous attractions on the swift and scenic USATF-certified
course, which is a Boston qualifier. Take the first step to experiencing
26.2 miles of fun, beauty, history and excitement by visiting
