FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Williams Route 66 Quarter Marathon Announces New Date For 2011
Tulsa, Okla. (Oct. 18, 2010) – The directors of the Tulsa Route 66
Marathon, Inc. announced today the date for the 2011 Williams Route 66
Quarter Marathon to be held on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2011. The Williams Route
66 Marathon will continue to be held on its traditional date, the Sunday
before Thanksgiving.
The quarter marathon was originally designed to kick-off training for the
Williams Route 66 Marathon events held annually in November. This year, the
event drew more than 2,000 runners and walkers from 11 states and the
Netherlands, but due to extreme Oklahoma summer temperatures, event
organizers chose to move the event to the fall for 2011 serving as a
training run for marathon and half-marathon participants.
"We were very pleased with participation in the quarter marathon, which has
blossomed into one of the state’s largest races," said Chris Lieberman,
executive director of Tulsa Route 66 Marathon, Inc. "But our number one
priority is always for the safety of our participants and each year we have
been very close to canceling the race due to extreme temperatures."
Moving the race to October allows participants to still use the race in
their training for the Williams Route 66 Marathon while ensuring their
safety and comfort in the cooler fall temperatures. The route will also
continue to be based on the marathon course allowing participants to get a
preview of the November course.
Race day events will include the 6.55-mile quarter marathon, a 5K and a
one-mile fun run. Additionally, "The Double," an option that allows
participants to run both the quarter marathon and 5K races in the same
morning, will be offered.
The Williams Route 66 Quarter Marathon was made possible this year by the
title sponsor Williams and presenting sponsor Blue Cross and Blue Shield of
Oklahoma along with more than 400 volunteers who registered participants,
manned Gatorade stops and passed out medals.
