Surf City USA® Marathon Embraces Philanthropic Fundraising;
Introduces One Mile Charity Run / Walk On Super Bowl Sunday
Spaces for marathon, half marathon and charity run are
filling at record pace
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. - The Surf City USA Marathon announces the a
addition of a One Mile Charity Run on Super Bowl Sunday, February 6, 2011.
The Surf City Marathon is the largest combined oceanfront marathon and half
marathon event in California. It features more than 20,000 entrants
participating in three divisions - marathon, half-marathon and one mile -
and is preceded by a two-day Active Lifestyle Exposition. Detailed
information is available at www.runsurfcity.com.
Unprecedented half and full marathon entries for the 2009/2010 race, and
the record pace that slots are filling for 2010/2011 led organizers to
switch from a 5K to the one mile run in order to accommodate the growing
number of "charitable" runners. Held in conjunction with the sixth annual
Run for Mobility, participants in the one mile charity run will start and
finish on Pacific Coast Highway in front of the massive crowds.
Historically Surf City USA Marathon features myriad heart-warming human
interest stories including hundreds of runners who have fought and
conquered disease, obesity and personal loss to those who participate on
behalf of several notable charities and causes including autism, cystic
fibrosis, cancer and many more. Chief among these is Irvine-based Free
Wheelchair Mission whose Run for Mobility has raised more than $1,600,000
during the past six years to send specially engineered wheelchairs around
the world.
"The one mile charity run/walk is dedicated to participants raising funds
and awareness for their favorite charities," said Surf City USA Marathon GM
Amy Tomchak. "Led by our longstanding partnership with Free Wheelchair
Mission, charitable fundraising is a major component at Surf City. By
implementing a shorter and more manageable run/walk, we open the door for
more folks to participate and call attention to these vital causes."
In the Sixth Annual Run for Mobility, runners will use the marathon, half
marathon, and one mile race to raise funds to build ingenious wheelchairs
that are made of outdoor furniture and mountain bike wheels, designed to
withstand the often rough terrain of underdeveloped countries. At just
$59.20 each, this remarkable fundraising event will change the lives of
over 3,000 people!
The Surf City USA Marathon, which serves as a "qualifier" for the
prestigious Boston Marathon, was rated among the top five marathon
experiences in America by Marathon and Beyond. The award-winning course is
scenic and flat with much of the race taking place on the beachfront
running path, but also featuring the famed pier, beauty of the Bolsa Chica
Wetlands and serenity of Central Park. More than 30,000 spectators from
all 50 states and 19 foreign countries are anticipated to pack the downtown
and outlying areas.
Formerly known as the Pacific Shoreline Marathon, the 15th Surf City USA
Marathon is held on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011; racing begins at 6:30
a.m. Staged in front of The Waterfront Beach Resort, a Hilton hotel, this
exclusive oceanfront course runs on Pacific Coast Highway, past the famous
Huntington Beach Pier and winds through the surfing beaches that define
Southern California. Weekend highlights include the two-day Active
Lifestyle Beach Expo and Michelob Ultra Post Race Beer Garden. More
information is available at www.runsurfcity.com.
