FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Announcing The Army Marathon:
Benefiting Soldiers, Veterans and Their Families - on April 21, 2013
Race Registration Opening on September 1, 2012
Temple, TX – August 28, 2012 – The Army Marathon is excited to announce its
first marathon scheduled for April 21, 2013, over a point-to-point course
in central Texas and complemented with a 5k run.
The marathon, produced in partnership with Scott & White Healthcare, is
expected to draw thousands of runners, with a course starting in Killeen,
TX near Fort Hood and ending in the nearby city of Temple, following a
26.2-mile course through Central Texas. April 21 was chosen for the
inaugural to commemorate April 19th anniversary of the "Shot Heard Around
The World" — the 1775 Battles of Lexington and Concord that signaled the
beginning of the American Revolution.
"The Army Marathon was created to honor our soldiers, veterans and their
families, and especially to help raise money and awareness for the many
organizations who serve these heroes," said Ed Bandas, president of The
Army Marathon.
The organization includes an advisory council led by Lt. Generals Don
Jones, USA, Ret. and Dave Palmer, USA, Ret. to manage the charitable
contributions for the event. Proceeds from the event will be contributed to
qualified charities that benefit active duty soldiers, veterans, military
families and survivors.
Said General Jones, "I am extremely pleased that the first Army Marathon is
being run in Central Texas. With pending budget cuts we must find the
resources required to provide needed services to the men and women that
have and are continuing to serve this nation in uniform."
In addition to the marathon and 5k, the weekend will include an expo at the
Bell County Expo Center and finish line activities for the runners and the
community at large.
Community support for the event has been overwhelming and The Army Marathon
is especially proud to announce Scott & White Healthcare as a top partner
and the exclusive medical sponsor for the event. Said Dr. Robert Pryor,
President and CEO, "It is our privilege to provide for the health care
needs of Central Texas and when members of our community undertake an
inspiring task like this one, we are proud to support them as much as
possible. Scott & White is committing numerous staff, resources and hours
in preparation for this inaugural event."
