KARA GOUCHER WINS USA WOMEN'S 10 MILE CHAMPIONSHIP,
SETTING WOMEN'S MEDTRONIC TC 10 MILE COURSE RECORD
10th Annual Medtronic TC 10 Mile held in
conjunction with Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon on Sunday, October 5
(Minneapolis, MN) – Olympian Kara Goucher, 30 of Portland, Ore., won her
first USA title on the roads today, taking first place in the USA Women's
10 Mile Championship. In the process, Goucher set a course record by
running 53:16, which bettered Katie McGregor's 2006 course record by 32
seconds. McGregor, 31 of St. Louis Park, Minn., who is a five-time champion
of the Medtronic TC 10 Mile finished second in 55:04. Kelly Liljeblad, 35
of Boulder, Colo., placed third in 57:06.
On winning the USA Women's 10 Mile Championship, Duluth, Minn., native
Goucher said, "This was so great. Most of my races are in Eugene or
California or Europe, so it's pretty rare for me to be able to race in the
Midwest, let alone in Minnesota. I never thought I'd be able to come
through Minnesota in a competitive season, so this was really special. I
saw a bunch of high school friends from Duluth East on the course and I was
waving to everyone. And setting the course record is a really big honor."
McGregor said, "I was expecting to be a little more competitive. I was
hoping to come back with a win. I love the course – it has always been my
home course."
On the men's side, top finishers include Josh Glaab, 25 of Superior, Colo.,
who completed the race in 50:29. Chris Erichsen, 22 of Bloomington, Minn.,
finished a close second in 51:16 and Justin Grunewald, 22 of Merrifield,
Minn., was third in 51:20.
