Honolulu Marathon Offers 8 Truck Loads of Race Supplies to Tsunami Victims
HONOLULU - Less than three weeks after their race, Honolulu Marathon
officials pulled thousands of race supplies from storage closets to donate
to Sri Lankan tsunami victims.
Officials spent much of Dec. 30 delivering eight truck loads of material to
Oceanit, a local engineering firm that is shipping relief supplies to the
tiny island nation.
Dr. Dayan Vithanage, the Sri Lankan native who is Oceanit's relief
coordinator, said the Honolulu Marathon made possibly the largest donation
he received.
Among the items donated by the Honolulu Marathon were 12,000 water cups,
2,000 marathon volunteer shirts, 600 shirts left over from the Honolulu
Marathon's Bryan Clay Clinic, 2,000 tee-shirt bags, 1,200 caps, 500
55-gallon trash bags, 500 pairs of surgical gloves, 360 cans of soft
drinks, 400 rolls of toilet paper, 288 bottles of water, 72 large bath
towels, 48 full-sized bed sheets, 20 1-gallon water jugs and 20 large
shipping boxes.
The Honolulu Marathon, which was America's third largest marathon of 2004
behind New York City and Chicago, was held Dec. 12.
