ING New York City Marathon 2004 - Overview
For the fans, the weather at the 35th running of the New York City Marathon couldn't be better: starting in the high 50s and rising to the mid 60s by race end. For the runners, the weather was a bit warmer than hoped for - but nothing compared to what a number of the competitors had experinced just 2-1/2 months earlier in Athens at the Olympics. The field assembled for the marathon was one of the strongest in memory, in both the men's and women's field - and the assemblage of American men was especially impressive.
The field included one world-record holder (Paula Radcliffe), one course-record holder (Margaret Okayo), two Olympic Marathon medalists (Meb Keflezighi and Deena Kastor), a half-dozen additional Olympic Marathon participants, a number of notable debutantes to the marathon (Bob Kennedy, Benita Johnson, Abdi Abdiridham), not to mention the usual strong field of marathon regulars. This was a marathon to savor.
More than 36,000 finishers completed the New York course through the five boroughs of the city. And in the lead were the elite women (who started earlier than the men), followed by the men. Both races featured a close race in which the winner was not decided until the last mile.
All races were exciting and we have the coverage and runner comments.
