Press Release - AIMS Best Marathon Runner Of The Year Award - 10/16/14

    Candidates Announces for The 2014 AIMS Best Marathon Runner Award

The Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) is 
delighted to announce the candidates for the 2014 AIMS Best Marathon Runner 
Award. The winners will be announced and presented with their awards during 
the AIMS Best Marathon Runner Gala in Athens on the night of Friday 7 
November 2014.
 
The candidates are (in male and female categories, each in alphabetical 
order):
 
MALE:
 
Dennis Kimetto (KEN)
Bank of America Chicago Marathon (Oct' 2013): 1st in 2:03:45
BMW Berlin Marathon (Sep' 2014): 1st in 2:02:57 (a new world record time)
 
*Important Notice: For the Male Best Marathon Runner Award 2014, the AIMS 
Athletes' Nomination Committee has decided that for this year (01 Oct 2013 
till 30 Sept 2014) Dennis Kimetto is the one and only candidate. During the 
above period there was no other candidate who came close to his 
credentials. There was no Olympic Games or World Championships held within 
this period. The two performances, mentioned above, of Dennis Kimetto made 
him such a standout candidate that the Nomination Committee merely seeks 
the endorsement of voting AIMS members to announce him as the male winner 
of the 2014 BMR Award.
 
FEMALE:
 
Rita Jeptoo (KEN)
Bank of America Chicago Marathon (Oct' 2013): 1st  in 2:19:57
BAA Boston Marathon (Apr' 2014 - on an 'assisted' course): 1st in the 
world's leading time of 2014, 2:18:57 (No other woman has run under 2:20 in 
the past two years)
 
Florence Kiplagat (KEN)
Virgin Money London Marathon (Apr' 2014): 2nd in 2:20:24
eDreams Mitja Marató de Barcelona (Feb' 2014): 1st  in 1:05:12 (a new world 
record time in the Half Marathon, improving on Mary Keitany's previous mark 
by 38 seconds).
 
Candidates will be voted for by full members of AIMS. The winners in both 
male and female categories will be declared and awarded at the AIMS Gala in 
Athens on 7 November 2014.

About the AIMS Best Marathon Runner Award Gala

The purpose of the BMR Award Gala is to:
 
I. Announce and honour the best male and female Marathon runners 
of the year through the AIMS BEST MARATHON RUNNER (BMR) Award. The BMR 
Award replaces the AIMS World Athlete of the Year Award.

II. Recognise and honour exceptional Marathon figureheads and 
personalities for their contribution to the development of the Marathon 
movement.

III. Publicise and promote the best practice and initiatives of AIMS 
members (370+ race organisers) through the establishment of special 
environmental and social awards.

IV. Enhance the role, programs and services of AIMS.
The event will be staged in Athens, Greece on Friday 7 November 2014.

The Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) is a 
member based organisation and since being established in 1982 has grown to 
a membership of more than 370 of the world's leading distance races, from 
over 100 countries and territories. AIMS Members come from every continent
