Road Runner Akron Marathon Announces Winner Of The 2010 Ambassador Award
AKRON, Ohio (Sept. 21, 2010) - Amby Burfoot has been selected as the
recipient of the 2010 Road Runner Akron Marathon Ambassador Award. The
award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated superior service and
dedication to the running industry, or who have earned respect within their
community for their exceptional accomplishments.
Burfoot, a lifelong runner, was the winner of the 1968 Boston Marathon, as
well as many other national and international races. He won the Manchester
Road Race nine times, an event he has run for 46 straight years. Burfoot,
64, is executive editor of Runner's World magazine and author of "The
Runner's Guide to the Meaning of Life." He resides with his family in
Emmaus, CT.
"While I've never been to the Road Runner Akron Marathon before, I've heard
many wonderful reports about the marathon from my fellow runners," said
Burfoot. "I'm very pleased and honored to receive the award and to finally
come to Akron to participate in the event I've heard so much about. I'm
really looking forward to this weekend."
The annual Ambassador Award, which began in 2008, will be given to Burfoot
on Thursday, September 23rd at the 8th Annual Mayor's Reception. The award
is bestowed by the Akron Marathon Charitable Corporation Board of
Directors. Past recipients include Bill Rodgers and Kathrine Switzer.
"Amby truly personifies what this award is all about," said Anne Bitong,
executive director of the Road Runner Akron Marathon. "As both a runner and
a writer, he truly champions the sport of running."
According to Bitong, to receive this award, the candidate must meet or
exceed specific criteria. They must have sustained significant
contributions toward advancing the sport of running, community support,
leadership, health and fitness and a positive impact on society in general.
The Board of Directors assembles and reviews the possible recipients,
ultimately choosing the best candidate.
Race organizers are encouraging runners to register as soon as possible for
all events, as they are filling fast. The last opportunity to register will
be at the Health & Fitness Expo on Friday, September 24, 2010 from 11:00
