Press Release - Barcelona Marathon - 12/27/11

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Chema MartÍNez Bets On The Zurich Marató De Barcelona

The athlete from Madrid, sub champion of Europe in Barcelona 2010, will
return to the Catalan capital city to participate next March 25, 2012, in
the 34th edition of the event.

Barcelona, 27/12/2011 – The Spaniard Chema Martínez, European sub champion
in force of marathon and one of the most charismatic Spanish athletes of
the history, has confirmed his participation next March 25, 2012 in the
34th edition of the Zurich Marató de Barcelona. Martínez, 40 years old,
will return this way to the city in which in 2010 achieved the sub
championship of Europe, which was his third great international podium
after the gold and the silver conquered in 10.000 meters in Munich 2002 and
Goteborg 2006.

With his participation, the runner will pay off a kind of outstanding debt
with the Zurich Marató de Barcelona, to which he had to renounce in 2008
due to a disease, and he will meet again his fans who encouraged him to
conquer the silver medal in the European Championship celebrated in the
summer of 2010. "I have always said that I had an outstanding debt with la
Marató de Barcelona since in 2008 the organization trusted me and finally I
couldn't come. It is a consolidated event that just now is the best one of
Spain, it has a very fast circuit in which good records can be done, and I
also have good memories of the support of the people in Barcelona when in
2010 I ran the European Championship", assures Chema Martínez, who in the
streets of Barcelona will dispute his 20 marathon since he made his debut
in this category in 2002.

Chema Martínez's bet on the Zurich Marató de Barcelona is total, as this
one will be the race in which he will look for the passport for the Olympic
Games of London 2012. "I want to obtain a good record, but without risking
excessively because to be in London is at stake. I am not prepared to make
2h07', which is the record reached in Barcelona in the last two years, but
I am ready to pass the half marathon in 1h04'45" or 1h05", which is a pace
to finish in 2h09' or 2h10", explains the athlete.

Martínez, whose best record in marathon was obtained in 2003 in Rotterdam
with a time of 2h08'09" obtaining the third position, has participated in
this race in five World Championships, one Olympic Games and one European
Championship. Despite the sub championship in the European of Barcelona
2010, his best result was achieved in the World Championship of Berlin
2009, where he finished eighth and was the first European athlete of white
race who arrived to the finish line.
