First Bay of Fundy International Marathon is a Two-Nation Event
Lubec, Maine and Campobello, New Brunswick -- September 24, 2012 -- Two
fishing villages that share an international border and the Bay of Fundy
are excited to announce a two-country race, the first Bay of Fundy
International Marathon for Sunday, June 23, 2013.
The event features the best of Downeast Maine and the Atlantic Maritimes,
lobsters included. The race weekend includes a companion 10K, a pasta and
lobster dinner, and an after-race street party.
This is a remote and rural marathon, in one of America's and Canada's most
quiet corners. The two beautiful places -- Lubec, Maine, and Campobello
Island, New Brunswick -- share shorelines, clean air, cool temperatures in
June and lighthouses that have guided the way for mariners for generations.
Now come the marathoners.
Starting at the West Quoddy Lighthouse, the gently rolling course offers
miles of water and harbor views. Crossing from the USA to Canada by way of
the FDR Memorial Bridge, the course takes runners around the Mulholland
Light and past the FDR Summer Home in the Roosevelt Campobello
International Park. Turning in the scenic fishing village of Wilson's
Beach, Campobello, the course retraces its steps back across the bridge to
finish along Water Street at the Lost Fishermen's Memorial Park in the
heart of Lubec.
"There are no big cities or bright lights here," Katherine Cassidy, race
founder and co-chair (USA), said. "We live simply, amid natural beauty. Our
volunteers are local, energized by the opportunity to share where we live,
work and retire. You will sense for yourself an unforgettable place, unlike
any other you have visited."
Adds Sue Keef, co-chair (Canada): "Our hospitality is genuine, and we
welcome runners, their families and other visitors to our special place.

John Hough is the marathon's race director. He last year relocated to rural
Maine after 17 years in New York with the United Nations Environmental
Programme. A runner for more than 30 years, Hough specializes in project
management. He has an appreciation for environmental details, and will
deliver a "clean and green marathon."
The marathon committee is a mix of volunteers representing both Lubec and
Campobello. Its meetings alternate between the two towns.
