Sign up for the BBC Televised Glencoe Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K
Monday 19th August 2013 - There are just seven weeks left to sign up for
Scotland's toughest marathon, a 26.2 mile off road route which winds
through one of Scotland's greatest national treasures with some of the
greatest views and most dramatic scenery in the world.
The Glencoe Marathon, which is being televised this year for BBC 2's
monthly sports magazine programme, The Adventure Show, takes place on
Sunday 6th October 2013.
This year's event, which is sponsored by first direct will also see the
introduction of a half marathon and 10K, with entries for all races open at
www.glencoemarathon.co.uk. The fastest marathoners are expected to complete
the scenic course in around 3 hours 50 minutes, but the event caters for
runners of all ages and abilities. Prices are £50 for the full marathon,
£40 for the half marathon and £30 for the 10K. Persons interested need to
register before the 6 October 2013.
Those participating in the full marathon will start on a route through the
pass of Glencoe, surrounded by the towering remains of this ancient super
volcano, before a grueling 500 metre climb up the fearsome Devil's
Staircase. From the Eastern edge of the Aonach Eagach Ridge, runners will
look straight onto the mighty Buachaille Etive Mor which has been voted one
of the top 10 greatest views in the world, before dropping back to sea
level at Kinlochleven. Climbing up through the Mamores the route rolls
gently before descending into Glen Nevis and the base of the mighty Ben
Nevis, the UK's highest peak. The route climbs a total of 1608 metres.
This year's nominated charities are the NSPCC's ChildLine Schools Service
and local charity partner, Project Northern Lights, which provide skills
for 15-25 year olds living in disadvantaged communities in Scotland to help
improve their education, training and employment prospects.
David Fox-Pitt, event organiser and founder of Loch Tay-based WildFox
Events, whose outdoor challenges have helped raise over £20million for
charity, said: "There are few marathon routes in the world that can rival
the drama and beauty of Glencoe. Whether you are a seasoned marathon
runner, a novice or a keen fundraiser we urge you to join us to experience
this amazing event which we hope will raise considerable funds for two very
worthwhile causes."
Mark Sullivan, a mortgage application specialist for first direct in
Hamilton, said "I'm really excited about the Glencoe Marathon. I signed up
for it to help raise money for ChildLine and Project Northern Lights, which
I believe are two excellent charities and the buzz I will get by completing
such a challenge is something I love. I've never run a marathon before, but
having taken part in similar endurance events in the past, I am confident I
can do it and I'm sure the scenery alone should more than make up for the
hours and hours of training! I can't wait."
