Houston Marathon Hall of Fame Inducts Former Course Director Carl Moerer
HOUSTON (December 4, 2014) - The Houston Marathon Committee (HMC) announced
today the election of former HMC Board of Director Carl Moerer into the
Houston Marathon Hall of Fame. Moerer will be honored by the Houston
Marathon Committee tonight at the 2015 Hall of Fame Reception hosted at The
Grove in Discovery Green in downtown Houston.
"Carl Moerer was the quintessential race volunteer. The knowledge that Carl
was on the job in the lead-up to and during our races was always
tremendously comforting as race day approached," said President of the
Board of Directors Brant Kotch. "His calm and reasoned judgment and
demeanor made everyone on his committee - and the event itself - better.
He is already missed."
Moerer's association with the Houston Marathon Committee began in 1980 and
over 35 years of volunteering, he only missed one race. Moerer spent the
duration of his time on the Course Committee, beginning back when the
Houston Marathon was a two-loop course at Memorial Park and was involved in
every course re-design in the ensuing years. Looking back on his time with
the HMC, Moerer said "In all those years, there are only two things I've
never seen: the start and the finish. The most important thing to me was
seeing that last person cross the finish line. That was my job to get them
safely around the course."
From 1987 through 1991, Moerer was the Course Director and instrumental in
the 1985 route redesign, which led to the first city-wide 26.2 mile course
in the history of the Houston Marathon. Moerer, a partner at Tate Moerer &
King, L.L.P., was also a member of the Houston Local Organizing Committee
responsible for hosting the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials for the men's and
women's marathon.
"It is a great honor to be inducted into the Houston Marathon Hall of
Fame," added Carl Moerer. "The people that I have worked with over the
years are life-long friends. To me, the volunteers are the people that make
the race happen every year and it's nice to be recognized for all of our
hard work."
