Press Release - National Marathon Safety and Security Summit - 10/20/14

                   Top Industry Experts to Present at
              National Marathon Safety and Security Summit

Marathon officials from across the country will converge on The University 
of Southern Mississippi's Hattiesburg campus Dec. 16-18 for the National 
Marathon Safety and Security Summit, hosted by the National Center for 
Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4).

The goal of the summit is to establish best practices by addressing major 
safety and security issues through input from marathon event 
administrators, government officials, city/state/federal law enforcement, 
city planners, emergency managers, first responders, health services, and 
fire/HazMat services.

To identify best practices, significant safety and security issues have 
been narrowed down to the following six topics:
Event Day Plan: Public/Private Collaboration

Facilitator: Josh Nemzer, Operations Manager, Boston Marathon
Crowd Dynamics/Management

Facilitator: Fred Gardy, Director of Security, Circuit of Americas
Emergency Action Planning

Facilitator: John Bertsch, Director, Public Safety Emergency Management, 
IRONMAN® World Championships Events

Risk and Threat Assessment/Vulnerabilities and Planning
Facilitator: Rich Serino, Former Deputy Administrator, Federal 
Emergency?Management Agency (FEMA), U.S. Department of Homeland Security 
(DHS)

Staff Performance
Facilitator: Russ Simons, Managing Partner, Venue Solutions Group

Technology Use/Implementation & Innovation/Information Management
Facilitator: Daniel Ward, Coordinator of Training, Exercise, and 
Assessment, National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4)

In a round robin type of format, these topics will be discussed throughout 
the event to identify solutions, lessons learned, voids, or new issues. 
Ultimately, the end result will be the formation of the Marathon Safety and 
Security Best Practices Guide, which will be unveiled at the National 
Sports Safety and Security Conference on July 6-9, 2015 in Orlando, 
Florida. In addition, Summit attendees will have the opportunity to hear 
from top industry experts at the Summit including opening remarks from Jim 
Estes, USATF, Peter Ciaccia, TCS New York City Marathon, and Rich 
Harshbarger, Running USA.
