Inaugural New River Marathon Announced
Todd, NC - The inaugural New River Marathon, Half-Marathon & 5K will be
held on May 7, 2011 and will showcase the scenic and serene New River
Valley nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Northwestern North
Carolina.
The New River Marathon's home is in Ashe County, the Northwestern-most
county of North Carolina, in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. With
less than 1,000 feet of elevation gain, The New River Marathon courses
primarily along the banks of the South Fork New River, one of only 14
American Heritage Rivers in the United States. Of the 17 miles with
pastoral vistas of the New River, 13 miles are along Railroad Grade Road, a
North Carolina Scenic Byway. For the 9 miles that wind away from the
flat and fast New River Valley, the course offers several short, aggressive
climbs, rolling country roads, and a challenging 2-mile section between
15.5 and 17.5 miles (the near 180 degree view at mile 17.5 is
breathtaking).
The venue for the start/finish is graciously hosted by the family-owned
Riverside Restaurant, which sits on the banks of the New River. This
National Register of Historic Places building is the former herb and root
warehouse for Brownwood and surrounding communities of Todd and Fleetwood.
Family and friends will not only enjoy the start and finish of each race,
but can cheer the marathoners at Mile 11 of the figure 8 course.
"The course for each event, the marathon, half-marathon, and 5K was
designed from a runner's perspective. We wanted to offer a scenic,
predominantly flat course, but with a taste of the mountains, a course that
the novice and experienced marathoner will enjoy," smiles Ken Sevensky,
race co-director. "What started as a desire to showcase the spectacular
scenery of the New River Valley is growing into an event that is being
embraced by the Ashe County Chamber of Commerce and Ashe County community."
The New River Marathon, Half-Marathon, and 5K are pending USATF
certification, and are organized and directed by Blue Ridge Endurance, LLC.
