TCS New York City Marathon Becomes World's Largest Marathon in 2023
New York, November 6, 2023 - The 2023 TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday,
November 5 was the world's largest marathon this year with 51,402 total
finishers, and the third largest edition of the race in the event's
history.
Below are some highlights and statistical information from the 2023 race.

change after final race scoring verification. This data is based on
registration information provided by individual runners.

- Men's open division winner: Tamirat Tola, Ethiopia, 2:04:58

Winner Statistics and Notable Information
- Wheelchair Division: Catherine Debrunner broke the event record from
2022, after also breaking the World Record in Berlin this fall.
- Wheelchair Division: Marcel Hug won his third-consecutive TCS New York
City Marathon and sixth overall, extending the record for most wins ever
by an athlete in the wheelchair division. He also became the first man to
win all six Abbott World Marathon Majors races in a single year. H
missed his 2022 event record by three seconds.
- Wheelchair Division: Daniel Romanchuk, Aaron Pike, Susannah Scaroni, and
Tatyana McFadden earned spots on Team USA for the Paris 2024 Paralympic
Games. They are the first four athletes to be named to the team from any
sport.
- Open Division: World and Olympic medalist Tamirat Tola won his first NYC
title after 4th place finishes in 2018 and 2019. He broke the men's event
record by eight seconds.
- Open Division: 2023 Boston Marathon champion Hellen Obiri defeated the
strongest TCS New York City Marathon field in race history, winning in
2:27:23.
- Hellen Obiri became only the second woman to win the United Airlines NYC
Half and TCS New York City Marathon in the same year. She also became the
first to win New York and Boston in the same year since 1989.
- Open Division: Seven countries represented in the men's top-10: ETH, KEN,
