New York, March 28, 2024 - New York Road Runners (NYRR), the producer of
the TCS New York City Marathon, received nearly 165,000 applications for
today's 2024 marathon drawing - the second most in event history after the
50th running application in 2020. Runners around the world will find out
the status of their application today for the 2024 TCS New York City
Marathon, which will take place Sunday, November 3 and is one of 60 adult
and youth races held annually by the non-profit.
More than 50,000 runners are expected to run this year's TCS New York City
Marathon, which has become known as the best day in sports in New York,
attracting runners and spectators of all backgrounds, ages, and abilities
from around the world. Approximately four percent of the nearly 165,000
applications will be accepted.
"We are seeing tremendous demand for our 60 adult and youth races this
year, including the iconic TCS New York City Marathon, as people around the
world continue to catch the running bug to better their physical and mental
well-being," said Rob Simmelkjaer, CEO, NYRR. "With the goal of increasing
member access to our races, we are excited to launch a Member-Only
Second-Chance Drawing, a new perk for our members, giving them double the
chance at gaining an entry to our TCS New York City Marathon."
New this year, an NYRR Member-Only Second-Chance Drawing will also be held.
More than 17,000 NYRR members who meet the eligibility criteria and applied
to the non-guaranteed general entry drawing will automatically be entered
into the NYRR Member-Only Second-Chance Drawing, which also occurs today;
approximately four percent of them will also be accepted. NYRR Members who
are selected in the Second-Chance Drawing will be informed via email of
their selection before the end of the day after both drawings have
concluded.
Last year, the TCS New York City Marathon Official Charity Partner Program
raised a record $61.3 million for charity by way of 14,000 runners. Since
its inception in 2006, the TCS New York City Marathon Official Charity
Partner Program has raised more than $520 million for over 1,000 worthy
non-profit organizations across the globe. Before the official program
started, the New York City Marathon had served as an outlet for individual
philanthropic runners since the 1980s.
Runners who do not receive an entry through the drawing or claim a
guaranteed entry can still participate in the event through the 2024 TCS
New York City Marathon Official Charity Partner Program, which launches
today. Around 14,000 charity runners representing a record 598 causes are
expected to participate. For more information on the Official Charity
Partner Program please click here.
For this year's race, drawing applications were received during a
three-week registration period from February 28 to March 21. Thousands of
runners were also able to claim their guaranteed entries during this time
period through a range of entry methods, including NYRR's 9+1 program, NYRR
Virtual Racing, Time Qualifiers, and runners who have completed 15 or more
New York City Marathons.
