Active Marathoner Annexes Seventh Annual Roxbury Event
ROXBURY --Chuck Engle, who reportedly ran 48 sub three-hour marathons in
2006, easily won the seven annual Roxbury Marathon on Saturday, Dec. 11,
finishing the challenging course in 2-hours, 52-minutes and 29-seconds.
The winner, who is a Web programming for marathonguide.com, reportedly ran
47 marathons last year and won 23 of them.
He left shortly after accepting a plaque that was designed by longtime
Roxbury Road Race Series regular Dave Harvey, who also ran in the marathon,
so he could catch a flight to another marathon on Sunday.
Engle and second-place finisher Greg Mendina of Navesink, N.J., both easily
bested the previous record for the Roxbury Marathon.
Mendina was clocked in 2:54.18.
Elizabeth Mainiero of Southbury was the female winner, covering the layout
in 3:26.29.
The race had 72 finishers, which was 15 more than the previous record,
which was set in 2009.
Runners from as far away as Las Vegas competed in the run.
As has been the case in recent years, some runners who are seeking to
complete marathons in all 50 states participate in the Roxbury run.
The marathon was sponsored by the weekly Roxbury Road Race Series.
The top four overall male and female finishers each received a plaque that
was designed by Dave Harvey.
That group will hold the Roxbury Half-Marathon on Saturday, Dec. 18, at
8:30 a.m. starting at the Everett Hurlburt Community Park on West Apple
Lane.
There will be a $5 entry fee that can be paid that morning between 7 and
8:15.
Proceeds will go the T-shirt/grants campaign that the series has sponsored
for several years.
