Steinle Suffers For Squad

Britain's Mark Steinle almost squelched to a halt in his first marathon in
three years, when he could do no better than three and a quarter hours in
the heat and humidity of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon early
Sunday morning.
Steinle has been out with recurrent Achilles' tendon problems since shortly
after bringing his best down to 2.09.17 in the London Marathon 2003.
The 32 year old from Tunbridge Wells said,"I was going OK ‘til around 15k,
but then the heat or, rather the humidity hit me, I was walking by 20k. I
think it was heat exhaustion. I was drinking a lot of water, but then
bringing it back up again almost immediately. It got worse when the women
started to pass me. I thought about dropping out a hundred times, but I was
part of a team, and didn't want to let the others down.
"I came back to the hotel and was shivering and throwing up for a couple of
hours, but I feel better after a sleep. I just wasn't prepared. I've only
been training a few weeks. I've got to put a lot more work in if I'm going
to be ready for London next year".
Steinle wasn't gratified to learn that these were some of the coolest
conditions for the Singapore race, 25C and light rain, but high humidity.
"That didn't make me feel better, and I certainly shan't be running
Singapore again," he said.
Kenya's Salina Kosgei was the star of the show. She barely showed a trace
of exhaustion after smashing the course record by almost three minutes, and
finishing that much ahead of her pursuers, in 2.31.55. Her colleague, Amos
Matui repeated his win of last year, also breaking the course record, with
2.15.01.
