"Supportive from the 'charm city' locals" (about: 2001)

The race was great, all the runners also supported each other adding to the festive spirit and carrying you through the race. Great cheering for a small city from the locals too.

Can not imagine a better marathon. All was well done.

"Enjoyable Race - Much Improvement Over 2001" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

This was my second time running Baltimore and my 63rd marathon or ultra overall.

It was an enjoyable race in every way. What more can I say?

I had previously posted several negative comments with regard to the 2001 Baltimore Marathon, but these can now all be disregarded.

If anyone had a complaint about this race with regard to anything under the race director's control, I cannot imagine what it would be. I spoke/e-mailed the organizers several times with comments and questions about the race, and found them to be extremely professional and helpful.

I will return to Baltimore next year and I will recommend this race to others.

"For my first marathon, not so bad!" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

This was my first marathon. I had heard the horror stories of last years course and was a little scared! The incline through Druid Hills (1-3) was not even noticable. However, 17-22 -- ouch! For everyone who complained about the hills: HELLO! it's in Baltimore!! What did you expect? I was well trained (thanks LifeSports!) and although the hills were definitely challenging, they were doable.

Things I enjoyed:
- water/gatorade stops were great
- the spectators! What fun!
- scenic route
- the finish line was great

Things that could be better:

- although the course was challenging and scenic, Baltimore has some much better areas than North Ave!! Fells Point maybe? More of Federal Hill??
- the start line was too far from the stadium
- more entertainment on the course would be cool (especially towards the end for those of us who are out there for awhile!)

Overall, I had a great time and plan on doing it again! Baltimore is difficult, so for a first time marathon I'm pretty proud and it gives the confidence that I can go to other cities and perform pretty well.

Great Job!

"a well-organized, fun race" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

Congratulations on a well-run marathon! Positives included the best staffed and maintained water/gatorade stops I have experienced (loved the Johnny U jerseys at mile 19!), a relatively uncrowded starting area, and an inspirational and very cool finish through Camden Yards. The hills were not bad at all (far less than Country Music Marathon, the other hilly race I have run) and the fans, although not large in number, were enthusiastic.

"Better Than Expected!" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 5

This was my 5th marathon and I enjoyed this run more than others! The citizens of Baltimore made this marathon memorable to the point that I was 'almost' sorry when it was over. The organizers deserve props on desigining the course through so many neighborhoods so that we could meet those whose city we invaded for the day. From people out in front of their homes cheering us along to the fantastic support at all the aid stations...THANKS!!
So often organizers will advertise that Gatorade, GU and water will be provided at certain mile markers only to be disappointed when you arrive there. It was especially cool as we looked down the hill toward mile 19 and see all the blue shirts with #19 on the aid station volunteers.
I would like to see the organizers however work on attracting more vendors for the expo and improve the carbo load dinner. I agree also with earlier comments that the price was too high for the carbo load dinner for what was provided.
For those who complained that there were too many hills, I would ask you check yourselves. Maybe running marathons aren't for you. Are you expecting all downhill or flat courses? The organizers put a pretty accurate topo course description on their site so you knew what you were getting yourself into. There were no surprises!!
Kudos to the citizens of Baltimore, Baltimore Police and the city of Baltimore for having the courage to host it in light of the tragic events that were surrounding the area at the time.

"We Spoke & They Listened" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

It seems the organizers listened to the runners for once. Everything that may have been an issue in the Inaugural Year was fixed for the better in 2002. Packet Pick up and the expo was better organized, the course was better, the finish stretch though Camden yards was so cool! The Runners Only Area at the finish was much improved-- more space, more food, free beer, excellent massage and medical care. I even enjoyed the activities at the finish line-- bands, games& face painting for kids. An all together great race. Can't wiat until next year!

"A marathon worthy of a great city." (about: 2002)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

As the Race Director of the New Jersey Marathon I want to compliment the Baltimore Marathon organization on a first class production.

Some highlights:

- Registration was easy in a well thought out Expo.
- Plenty of parking with a short walk to the start.
- Organized start which allowed for me to get into my pace after the gun.
- The availability of Pacing Teams was great.
- Very fair newly designed course which allowed me to do my usual negative splits (3:26 finish).
- MarathonFoto did a great job on the course and at the Finish. They actually got the clock in the finish photo. Cheers to you Sean!
- Fluid Stations were well placed and fully staffed!
- Finish Area was well organized with little wait for a great after race massage.

One small suggestion: Allow for the use of the Porto-Johns that were near the baggage tent. They are needed more before the marathon than after and the lines inside the stadium bathrooms would have been less.

I will be encouraging my running club (NJRRC) to put this on the calendar next Fall!

"Very efficient and well organized race" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

I have run this race twice and actually liked last years course better. To the wimps who complained about hills, let them go run the Marine Corps and be bored to dealth. Who said a marathon is supposed to be easy? Packet pickup, parking, start and refreshments were outstanding. Crowd support was marginal in some areas. I would design a more colorful shirt. I hope this race stays and continues to grow.

"Baltimore unity and support" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

I could not have been more proud of Baltimore. The support of all the spectators gave me chills a numerous amount of times. For one day, I was able to forget the hate and the crime that seems to have consumed our nation now more than ever and relish in the unity and comraderie the great town of Baltimore provided for us runners. All in all, it was a better turnout, better course, and I was proud of my performance. I couldn't have done it without those in the galleries. One thing for next year, hopefully my name will be spelled Darla Burns, instead of Darala Burns. Those in my family in other states that were unable to see me perform have had a hard time finding my stats. But I guess, I need to brush up on my penmanship. Thanks for a great experience, Baltimore!
