"My First Marathon." (about: 2008)

This was my first marathon experience and I loved it. I'll definitely be running again! The only complaints I have are 1.) The water station that was supposed to be at mile 11 wasn't there - it was at mile 12, making that 3rd mile after mile 9 rough without water. 2.) The bag pickup was ridiculous. I just ran 13 miles, and now I have to stand in a herd of people unable to move or stretch while I wait and hold my number up for more then a half an hour! The people digging through the piles of bags are very much appreciated, but they looked completely overwhelmed. A new way to find the bags easier is needed. Regardless of these issues, I'll be back next year.

This was my first time running Fargo. The start was congested, but other than that it was a nicely run marathon. I hope to run it again!

I thought the planning and organization were excellent, and the people of Fargo Moorhead enthusiastically supported the event! I was really impressed by everything. I definitely plan on returning.

This was my first half-marathon, and it was one of the best things I have ever done! The crowd support was wonderful, and the whole atmosphere was one of excitement and celebration. What a blast!

I have only run small home-town races before, so I wasn't prepared for the size of this run. With so many participants (and spectators) at the start, it was extremely difficult to figure out where you were supposed to be and when. I would suggest that the races be staggered, and that the people running the later-starting races stay in the dome until their event is called. I spent several minutes at the start of the marathon/half-marathon weaving around 5K runners who were standing on the course. Very confusing, and led to a slow start.

One more thing I noticed: there were tons of water stations at the start of the run, but only one in those last few miles. That is when you really need the water!! It was so distracting to be thirsty with no access to water, when I should have been focusing on finishing....

All in all, this was a very enjoyable experience, and I will definitely be doing it again. The fans made it great! And we loved the kiddie-run, too - between the long runs, the 5K, and the kids' runs, we were able to make it a family affair! Way to go, Fargo!

"What's not to love" (about: 2008)

Excellent marathon, tremendous fan support, very well organized. I can't think of a thing I would change, except for making more showers available.

The course was more beautiful than what a first-time visitor to Fargo could have imagined. Most of the race weaved through residential areas, which protects the runners from wind and puts a little wind in the sails because of all the folks out supporting the runners.
The course is as flat as advertised, giving it PR potential. Thousands of volunteers did a great job distributing drinks and Gu, as well as keeping runners on course.

The course was well marked and chip splits were provided at 10K, and 13.1 and 20 miles. The race shirts are a keeper and the DQ post-race treats made up for fighting cramps over the last mile.

"A race that doesn't take itself too seriously" (about: 2008)

If the Fargo Marathon were a person, it would be the guy no one knows, but introduces himself as "Hi, I'm Fargo. I'm kind of a big deal..."

This race felt like a big-city race. Very well organized, great sponsor presence, outstanding branding (yes, I am in marketing), a surprising number of entrants, and great crowd support. But it never loses its small-town charm.

Let's see, I heard - and did - the chicken dance at mile four, enjoyed the band playing Rocky's theme a few miles later, saw a troll, had an old dude somewhere along the way handing out Kleenexes from his lawn chair, saw some retirees answering calls for MORE COWBELL, ate some Lefse... and so much more.

Flat, fast, and a genuine sense of humor. What more could anyone ask for? OK, maybe more actual food on the course - bananas, pretzels, and the like. Other than that, I would love to do this one again!

Really well run, wonderful volunteer support and lots of cheering fans. The course was - for the most part - flat, fast and lovely. I had a great time, got a personal best and was thrilled to qualify for Boston.

"What an event and what a community" (about: 2008)

As stated previously, great organization and event execution. Fantastic community - they understand what a marathon event means to their city. Plenty of friendly volunteers, official aid stations and many more resident provided stations too. Jolly Ranchers were sold out in Fargo, since all the residents were handing them out. The staggered port-a-potties along the course was a great idea. The wind was tough, but the course changed directions enough to break it up. Pre-race water other than water fountains would have been nice, but the Fargodome was a great staging place and the post-race showers were great option. With some very minor refinements, this will be a benchmark event for other medium-size mid-western marathons to measure against.

"Best Marathon!!" (about: 2008)

I've run NYC many times, Boston a few times and quite a few smaller marathons. This was the best! The community support was incredible: fans, volunteers, everybody. The route goes through many neighborhoods and the streets were full of people cheering you on! The logistics were handled flawlessly. Using the Fargo Dome for the expo, start and finish is brilliant - plenty of toilets and/or porta-potties. That was an all-time first for me! Everyone was incredibly helpful and welcoming. Absolutely fantastic. Interesting course. Flat, flat, flat. Only the wind was tough!
