"Great weather, nice course" (about: 2001)

The weather was excellent. The hill in the middle part of the course was a lot easier than the hill at mile 23 of the Steamtown Marathon. Ran 11 minutes faster than my previous PR set on a flat course at the Clearwater marathon in January. Ran 'unofficially' with a pace group. The group leader was great.

"Crowds , volunteers, police, etc. are great" (General Comments)

I would like to thank all of the people involved in putting on this marathon. From top to bottom everyone was excellent. The crowds are so enthusiastic and that really helped yesterday because when I was struggling, it really perked me up! The little kids giving high 5's and offering water and just the overall support is wonderfull. Also, all of the volunteers are polite and truly helpful. The police even cheer for you. Everyone at the finish really helped a lot also, from the chip removers to the water station and food tables. Again, it's a wonderful experience because Pittsburgh is beautiful, the race is tough, and the people are great. THANKS AGAIN! P.S. That was my 4th finish, I'll probably be back. "Pittsburgh always puts on a great race!!!!" (about: 2000)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

Ran Pittsburgh Marathon in 2000. It was hot, humid, no overcast, and it was tough. Fan support is awesome, downtown, Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, Southside, Oakland and of course in Bloomfield from mile 20-22 on Liberty Blvd. All the pain from mile 17-25 goes away when thousands of fans bring you home to the finish. Goosebumps for all racers of any speed. Finished in 3 hours 45 minutes, it was a tough day, finishing was good enough for anyone that day.
Ready for 2001. Maybe our nation's best will show up again this year.

"Excellent to Outstanding Course" (General Comments)

I am a Marine true and blue rough and tough, but the Pittsburgh Marathon brought me to my senses. The course was challenging to say the least, the temperature was in the high 70 or higher I was delirious or in shock but as a marine we stick to one of our sayings; Pain is Weakness Leaving the Body!!! The medical personnel were great and so were the locals. I will never make the same mistake twice and under-estimate a race/course by word of mouth again. My pain started at about the 15 mile marker(dehydration, stomach cramps, hallucinations, euphoria)just to name a few. I am a 40 yr old with about 9-10 previous marathons under my belt, but this particular race/course made me humble and respectfull of pre-marathon training. I caution everyone out there who is thinking of running this race!! don't neglect to properly train prior to this race like I didn't. I finished the race in 5 hours and 20-30 minutes and was crying for mama at the finish line (big tough marine!!). I know now why marathoners love to run 26 miles or 100 mile races - it's all about the pain, it's in their blood. You have to love pain and that's the bottom line, at least that's what I tell my wife at the finish line. My wife keeps asking me: why are you running this race/marathon again, did you not suffer enough last year or are you so dense and love the pain so much that you would go back out again and suffer like you did last year. I just look at her and answer the question with the most reassuring voice that I can muster 'BABY IF I AM GOING TO DIE LET IT BE IN SOMETHING THAT I LOVE TO DO LIKE RUNNING, NOT IN A CAR CRASH OR IN A PLANE CRASH, BUT ON MY OWN TWO FEET AND AT THE FINISH LINE AFTER I COLLECT MY MEDAL'. I hope to see a good turn-out at this year's race, I will be at the back of the pack from start to finish but finish the race I will - just like I did in May of the year 2000. god bless!! and see you at the finish line. little Marine (5'4 w/big heart). hoorah, hoorah, Semper Fidelis!!!!

"Management makes improvements" (about: 2000)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 4

For the entire marathon week in 2000 the weather was forcast to be hot, and yet the race director refused to move back the starting time from 9am. Finally in 2001, it's starting at 7:45. The course is very interesting, featuring lots of different Pittsburgh neighborhoods and their cheering fans. Great music with lots of variety. The water stations are well placed and well manned. I'll run this race again, and would recommend it for experienced marathoners that need some variety. It's a fine race for a beginner too.

"Pittsburgh Rocks" (about: 2000)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

Pittsburgh was my first marathon. The brutal heat, rock'n'roll bands, and industrial landscapes of the 'burgh made for an amazing initiation into the world of marathoning. Thanks to mom for trying to run the last miles with me. See you all in May!

"Top Notch event" (General Comments)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

I have run Pittsburgh 7 times and it never disappoints. Though the weather can be tough sometimes. Crowds are huge and supportive, and volunteers are awesome. I have run 2:33 here and it's a course for all abilities. This is a must run on your marathon calendar.

"Best fans make 26.2 easier when hot.." (General Comments)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

Pittsburgh marathon course is not very hilly as everyone claims...rolling hills with a medium slope between 10 and 12 make it just a little bit more interesting. The crowd support and organization are FANTASTIC. This is the fourth time I ran Pittsburgh. The fans this year were so nice and understanding..ice,water, water hydrants and garden hoses spitting water were plentiful. On the course you even got to choose between green and red powerade, strawberries, oranges and bananas!

"Hot day, great people, beautiful city" (about: 2000)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 5

Pittsburgh was awfully hot that day but that was noone's fault. It was not predicted. I loved the course, I just wish that there would be more porta- potties and some power gels on the course. I think I got used to being given food and gels from the Marine Corps Marathon and expected that, and I needed something to eat. Thanks to the spectators. Polka Band was great, the people giving strawberries and oranges were awesome. Pittsburgh community was waiting for this marathon and was prepared for it. The expo was small, I thought.

"Hot and hilly!" (about: 2000)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

Training temperatures never rose above 60, but the race day was brutally hot with unrelenting sun. There's no shade on this course. The elevation chart is deceiving and the middle part of the course is rolling hills. The best part of the day was the great spectators of Pittsburgh. They offered their support, water, ice and lots of cheers. I especially liked the polka band!
