"No complaints here" (about: 2007)

I really had a good time in Vegas. As with any race, there were minor hiccups, but nothing that was truly distracting.

From a participant's perspective, the race logistics were hard to beat.
1) Packet pickup was quick and easy.
2) Total time from my room (MGM) to the starting area was less than 15 minutes.
3) The start, although crowded, gets major cool points with the Elvis factor and the fireworks.

The first 8 miles of the course were obviously the best and the topography made for a fast course. I suspect that some of the complaints about the 1/2-full split are from unauthorized headphone users. ;-)

Spectators were hit or miss, but the ones that were out were outstanding. I really appreciated the volunteers at the aid stations!

I signed up for this race and then read all the negative comments about 2006. I was really unsure of what to expect. The expo went fine. The start was a little chaotic - trying to get from inside Mandalay Bay to the corral. Once there, everything was great.

It did take a long time to get to the start line, but that isn't unusual. The Strip, and fireworks, the rising sun... it was overwhelming. I loved the excitement of the first several miles. After that I had a chance to mellow out and take in the natural beauty of the mountains and desert vegetation. I knew a major snowstorm was pounding the Midwest so I wasn't too upset about running in 55-degree weather without a lot of scenery for awhile. I found the aid stations always had water ready. The mile markers were visible once I started looking for them. I had read that I needed to pay attention for the split, so I did and had no problem going on the right route.

People at the finish were friendly. The girl who gave me my medal gave me a hug too. I don't know if she was from a show or not, but her sincerity in what she was doing was moving. I also received a pink rose when I finished. Nice touch! Being Vegas, I gathered my family and goodies, showered up and hit the town. I imagine that with all the nice touches that were added in '07, and the real solutions that were put in place to address previous problems from '06, this race is only going to get bigger and better.

Perfect temperature (cold at start, warmed up as soon the sun came out), no wind, pancake flat. My water belt was entirely unnecessary because there were water tables every mile. The road was a bit torn up at miles 24 and 25 due to construction, but tolerable. We got married at the run-through wedding chapel! There were several cheer-leading teams along the course to keep us motivated. We also received crowd support through the residential neighborhoods, on the strip, and around mile 20/21. A great experience overall and I can't wait to run it again.

"Where is the Gatorade? Most crowded finish ever!" (about: 2007)

I have run 4 minor marathons, 2 major marathons, an ultra and 3 ironman race, and I have never been so upset with race organization in my life! Running the Strip was cool, and then stuff hit the fan. The half marathon/marathon was not marked and I had to tell the police officers where they needed to stand and how to direct traffic; then later I saw 8 runners running the course backwards because they missed their turn. Later, as I was running all alone with no spectators, I realized that the aid stations that were supposed to have Gatorade had none... which really sucks when your race plan included drinking Gatorade at mile 22-25. Lastly, I can't believe they merged the half-marathoners with the marathoners with 2.5 miles to go. I was easily running sub-2:40 pace until I hit the wall of people at mile 23.5. I literally had to dodge people (I hit at least three); I ran off the course behind spectators to avoid the slower-moving half-marathoners, and even had to skip the last aid station because it was too crowded! Next time they need Gatorade at every station, volunteers who know what they are doing, and the marathon and half-marathon course should not merge at the end!

"What a difference from last year" (about: 2007)

6-10 previous marathons | 3 Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathons

Wow, what a difference from last year. I've been lucky enough to do this marathon 3 years in a row and this was probably my favorite of the three so far.

I do agree that there is still room for improvements. The half marathon split SHOULD have been better marked than it was and I thought the some of the mile markers were still a little off, but nothing like last year.

Why are people complaining about this year's race? Did we run the same marathon? Come on, people, when are you going to be satisfied? I thought Devine really went out of their way to put on a great event and correct some of the issues from last year.

Here are some examples of things they corrected:

1. The expo last year was a disaster. There were long lines to get your bib. This wasn't a problem this year.

2. The start line in '06 was also bad but I had no problem this year. Volunteers were checking bib numbers to make sure people were in the proper corrals. I didn't have a problem at all.

3. Porta-potties were at every mile if not half a mile. This was not an issue at all.

4. Mile markers were for the most part very accurate except for a couple that didn't seem correct. Overall this was not an issue.

5. There was plenty of post-race food. Not a problem this year.

People complaining about the volunteers and lack of crowd support should drag their butts out around 2-3 a.m. in 38-degree weather to volunteer at a local race. Volunteers DON'T get paid - remember that. Please appreciate what these people do for us. Also understand that spectators don't have an obligation to be out there cheering on runners at 6 in the morning in near-freezing weather. I know I'd rather be sleeping in myself.

"Most fun I've ever had in a race" (about: 2007)

I ran the half marathon as one of the running Elvi. I was registered for the full, but switched about 3 weeks before the race when my work schedule changed and I wasn't able to get in enough mileage for the full. I think that for a relatively young race this event was great. I can see that for a serious runner (sub 3:30) or someone trying to qualify for Boston, the zaniness and loose structure could've been frustrating. In comparing it to Chicago and the Indy 500 Mini Marathon, I'd say that what Las Vegas lacks in organization and volunteers it more than makes up for in fun. Come on, you get to run up the Strip! I would not be surprised, however, if you see fewer people run the marathon and more running the half in the coming years. I think the event is better suited to being a really fun half-marathon.

"How do I get a refund?" (about: 2007)

Even though the website for the marathon advertised that there was no time limit, after I hit the Mile 14 mark at 3 hours and 20 minutes, they started rolling up the course! After I hit mile 15, there were NO MORE MILE MARKERS, SIGNAGE FOR THE ROUTE, or WATER STOPS AT ALL! And no vans patrolling the route, as promised. In several places where they had reopened the roads, there were NO SIDEWALKS EITHER, so we were forced to run on ankle-breaking gravel and on the STREET with cars coming. It was downright DANGEROUS. Not to mention, no visible mile markers until mile 3 and no visible signage for the marathon/half marathon split. Many people ended up having to double back, some adding 2-5 miles to their overall distance.

Don't waste your time.

"Far surpassed low expectations" (about: 2007)

1 previous marathon | 1 Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon

I had quite low expectations after reading all the negative comments here about last year's race. But I was pleasantly surprised in almost all cases.

The start seemed a little disorganized and I didn't notice (or may have just missed) signage for where to go based on your pace. They could probably use more and better-delineated corrals. But once I crossed the start, I didn't have much of a problem maneuvering around walkers/slower joggers.

I thought the spectators and volunteers were terrific and I never was wanting for water/Gatorade from start to finish. Also, good marks for the entertainment (fireworks, Blue Man Group, Elvis impersonators, etc.)!

My biggest complaint is that the half/full split near downtown needed signage, not just one guy barking out "half, left... full, straight." Luckily I heard him because I hadn't plugged in my iPod yet; otherwise I might have been one of those that missed the turn. They really need to do better with this. I also missed a lot of the mile markers. These could be better noted as well.

The course is average. It's fun to run along the Strip and through downtown, but there's just not a lot to see after that. And it was sometimes challenging to find a flat running groove with the camber of the roads.

Bottom line: I think Las Vegas and Devine (good running shirt and medal, by the way) did a really good job and I would run this race again.

"Still needs work done to improve" (about: 2007)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon
COURSE: 2  ORGANIZATION: 2  FANS: 2

I'm sorry. This race, for this size, needs improvements - drastically.

1. Corrals, corrals, corrals. What an unorganized race start. It took me and my friends 20 minutes to get to the start. Plus, we could barely hear the national anthem. And walkers need to learn to stay on the right side, if they choose to stay towards the front of the line, so us runners can pass on the left! I was passing left and right - walkers were everywhere!

2. Whats up with the lack of markers for the marathon/half marathon split? I know someone who was running the full who took the half course! Why is it that the Elvis runners and the married runners all got banners, yet the split did not??? I studied the course map, and was still caught by surprise.

3. What's with pouring my own water at the water stations??? That was frustrating.

4.Why advertise power gel at mile 8 or 9, and then have nothing to give out? Thank God I carry my own Gu.

5. I did like the course and loved the Vegas girls in our finisher photos. But maybe Elvis would be cool too - for the ladies who may not like the girls. (By the way, I thought the showgirls were fun; I posed with one!)

I realize LV is a young race. But I did Wirefly DC this past year, and they are a young race as well - and yet, what a huge difference in organization! So being a young race IS NOT an excuse.

Thank you, volunteers!! I will not return to this race. And I will tell others not to waste time and money on it. Until I read awesome comments, I'm not returning.

"FRUSTRATING BEYOND BELIEF!" (about: 2007)

3 previous marathons | 2 Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathons

I was scheduled to run the full marathon and NEVER saw or heard anyone or anything about the split for the half marathon. When I finally asked at mile 9 where the turn-off was for the half marathoners, I was told, much to my surprise and shock, that I was on the half marathon course. I couldn't believe it! The fireworks, bands, etc. mean nothing if you can't even get the basic details of the race laid out clearly for the racers who put so much time and energy into their training and travel. There is no excuse for this kind of mistake in a race this big. Won't be back!
