"Excellent Race, Warm Welcome" (about: 2006)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 I was browsing possible race possibilities for late '07 & early '08 and was surprised to see all the negative comments about the Las Vegas Marathon - I have enjoyed BOTH Devine-run LV Marathons very much. I liked the old one as well, but Devine has added a lot. There were not huge crowds of spectators but so what? The people who turned out were friendly and cheered us on. The volunteers were great, the entertainment was great. I have been treated very well the three times I've come to LV for a marathon. I also would add that any city that changes all its traffic logistics in the middle of their town is trying hard to welcome its marathon visitors. My advice to anyone thinking about coming is to do so - enjoy the race, enjoy the town. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 4 While the 2006 event had many foul-ups, I had an awesome experience in my first marathon. While part of that was due to it being my first marathon, running the Strip and Fremont Street were great. The volunteers and fans were enthusiastic and supportive. I expect more fans in the future, but probably not to the level of the great marathons, as Las Vegas is a 24-hour town and a fickle one at that. Devine sports messed up a lot of things, as others have eloquently explained. Going forward, however, there will be much more local control and organization. I've spoken directly with the President of the Las Vegas Track Club about all this, and he clearly delineated how the various issues will be addressed to make the 2007 LVM a vast improvement over 2006. Even if Devine doesn't know how to put on a large event, Las Vegas certainly does, and Las Vegans are now running the show. Good luck to everyone pursuing their running and fitness dreams. | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 1 Inept organization resulted in the worst marathon I've run in over ten years. Inaccurate mileage markers, no food or water at the finish, haphazardly placed clocks on the course, course entertainment was not as promised, start line allowed walkers and joggers at the HEAD of the line (!?!), finish line was overrun with spectators on the course and in front of the finish chutes, and a cheap cotton t-shirt to remember this by. I paid $95 expecting the Rock 'n Roll marathon; what I got was a terrible marathon experience. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 4 I had a great time at this race and was really surprised to see how many people hated it. Maybe my standards are a bit lower.... The only real trouble was the mile-24 water station had RUN OUT OF WATER when I passed (I was running at a 5-hour pace, so there were still plenty of people behind me too). I spent the entire next mile freaking out about whether mile 25 would also be out of water, which would have been a real problem for my hydration. The start was super chaotic and there was no info anywhere about where to go. BUT! I thought the course was great and I loved the silly bands playing every couple miles. Running the Strip at dawn was nice, and then we had nice views of the mountains outside of town for the rest of the course. (People complaining about the "boring" course maybe haven't been off the Strip before - did they think it was going to be 26.2 miles of the Luxor?) And I ADORED the running Elvises!!! They were fabulous! Thanks to them for making the race so fun. This was my first marathon, so of course I will always remember it fondly. I don't really care about the free t-shirt or the free food - the running was great. It's a completely unique course and in the end I think the fun outweighed the trouble. | |

COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 4 I am so happy to see loads of runners dumping on this mess. If you are someone who has no concern for your finish time, enjoy it, as it is a nice course. If you are serious about your performance, STAY AWAY from this train wreck! Bring back the old marathon, or at least a crew who can get it right. One e-mail, a shallow apology, said one of the directors was a marathon vet. Sure.... (Mile markers? Water stops?Porta-potties? Prompt start time? Post-race nutrients?Medical help? T-shirt? Expo? Did I miss anything?) These guys see the big picture: YOUR money! | |

"Devine is NOT so Devine" (about: 2006)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 2 Pros: Excellent Volunteers Announcer was enthusiastic, energetic and supportive especially at the finish Blue Man Group Plenty of Port-a-lets Running the strip/downtown Cons: - National Anthem was not heard, although speakers worked. Very Sad. - Mass start (half and full marathon) start was terrible. People were climbing over the fence/rail, and creating there own gate instead of going through the bull pen entrance. Question, why was the tall fence on the street-side verses the parking lot side? - Marathon and half marathon split: one person holding A sign for each. There was no warning, no-one was hollering for people to be prepared for the turn off, for example: 1/2ers take a left . This did not affect me, but several 1/2ers it did! More support in the half turn off area would be nice. - Being Vegas, I was extremely disappointed in the entertainment along the course (no thought went into it) which seemed odd especially since Chris Devine has been in the entertainment industry for years. - Finish line entertainment until 1:00pm per the press kit? Wow, I must have missed something even though I finished a few hours earlier. There was absolutely nothing at the finish line. Guys this is Vegas, what's up with that? - NO Food or Gatorade at the finish line. Oh, I did get a bottle of H20. - Entertainment attracted me to this marathon, yes I was extremely disappointed. - Can the shirts be any cheesier?..... - Miles were WAY miss marked Honestly, I was disappointed in this event, maybe because I had such high expectations. After all, It's VEGAS! I left with the feeling that it was only about money and more money and getting Chris Devine's name out there, not about the runner. Why should I return (to run the race) OR participate in another Devine event OR tell anyone else to run it or a Devine race. | |

"Big Disappointment!" (about: 2006)

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 2 This was my 10th marathon, my husband's 9th marathon and my friend's 2nd. First of all, I was disappointed that we did not get the shirt sizes we asked for. My husband and I registered for the race in April, and couldn't believe that they could not give me the correct size. I also thought that for the price of the marathon, the shirt could have been a little nicer (long-sleeved, 2-sided, etc.). You also had to know your bib number to pick up your packet. You couldn't use your name. So if you didn't bring it with you, you had to wait in a line to flip through a book with numbers to find yours. What's wrong with just using your name to pick up the packet? Race morning was a nightmare! There were barricades up the entire length of the road, and no one knew how to get over. I told my husband to go on, and my friend and I just kept walking until we found a hole. The race was also late starting. I don't know if they were waiting for the fireworks to end or what, but it did not start on time. I agree with the other comments about the course. Once you got off of the strip, it was pretty boring. You really didn't see any houses or groups of people again until about mile 17 or 18. The last 2 miles had to be marked incorrectly. It felt like we were on the side road for at least 30 minutes. At the finish, food and water were not easily accessible. I saw water WAY ACROSS the parking lot, but I never saw any food or a sign about where to get it. I just went back to the hotel with nothing. Overall, this not a very difficult course. I am used to running hills, and this was one of the easier ones I have done. I am glad to say I have done it, but I will not be back for another one. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 WOW! I don't even recognize the race most of the comments here refer to. I ran the last of the old LV course (Jean, NV to LV), in Jan. 05, then I ran the first "New LV Marathon" in Dec. 05. I have to say I LOVED the new course. Running on the strip was a blast. And so what if a lot of the course was unspectacular scenery after the strip? They can't all be Paris! I thought that first race was very well organized and we got a nice short-sleeve tech shirt. Wonder why for the 2nd year they went back to cotton t-shirts? I also ran Salt Lake City in June '06, another Devine race, and I thought it was also a very well organized race - AND there we also received a nice short-sleeve tech shirt. Wonder what happened?? | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 5 A month before the marathon, I noticed I was in wrong age group (I am 29 years old but somehow I was placed in 30-34 group). Contacted Devine by email and two weeks later, got a "we will fix it" short reply. One week before the event, still no fix, so I emailed them again. This time no reply. At the expo I told them about it; the staff is friendly but no use with my problem. After the half marathon, I gave it a final try and asked them to correct it. Still no reply. I guess as long as they got my $85 already, they don't give a damn. To add insult to injury, I got the email telling me where on the web I can get my finisher's certificate printed. I went there and I was still in the wrong age category - so what's the point of printing it out? Clocks and mile markers were way off. I was thinking it will improve next time. Then I got an email from the racing director, and among the things he said is that he is a veteran marathoner. Up till then I thought the LV Marathon organizers tried but didn't know better. Now I know that the director is a veteran runner and thus actually knew what is important in marathons but didn't even bother to get it right. "I already have their money, so no need to try harder" mentality. Now I noticed that the LV Marathon website has removed the CONTACT US link. Maybe their inbox was clogged with complaints? I am no longer frustrated or mad, but just amused at Devine's apparent incompetence and lack of attempt to hide any of it. Yes, just amused. I wonder how low it can and will go in the future. There are some movies that are so bad that it's actually entertaining to watch. Devine is the marathon-organizer equivalent of that bad movie. |
